Why don't they make SG standards in more than two colors?

I love SGs, but why do they only make 'em in two colors? Is it because they invest more in LPs? Or some other reason?

Because that's what color they come in! ;)

Over the years there have been walnut/brown and white in addition to black and red. Every once in a while there will be a special run with different colors, but I agree.

They need to make white a standard color.

Re: Why don't they make SG standards in more than two colors?

Why don't they make them neck through with 24 frets? Because Gibson, that's why.

Oh yeah Honey Burst was available in 2013 as well.

Re: Why don't they make SG standards in more than two colors?

Why the heck would anyone want an SG in a color other than red or black? Angus never played a white SG!

Because white looks sexy as hell on a SG.

Maybe it's just me, but I don't think that white looks particularly good on an SG usually. I think the only time I like it is on an SG Custom or similar.

Furthermore, all of the Gibson standard models this year are offered in only red or black. The exceptions are the Firebird (offered in any color you want as long as it's sunburst only) and the LP which is offered in a multitude of colors.

Over the last 10 years or so, Gibsons made SG's in many colors, models, PU configurations, tailpieces, and configurations. All you have to do is look around at used guitars. They're not going to make all of these every year because the market's not there.

Yep. I'm surprised Gibson doesn't use a lot of colors on their SG Stds, but if you keep your eyes open you'll see limited runs. A couple of my favorites were 2012 Sam Ash specials in pelham blue and bullion gold. I still kick myself for not grabbing one of those. However, I do have a candy red SG Diablo which is one of my favorite guitars.

Yeah, SGs have had the full gamut of colors over the years. Once you get into the Supremes and Diablos and various Limited Editions (Voodoo, Naked, etc.), then you start getting some interesting finishes.

+1. There's been many limited runs with both Gibson & Epiphone; some were a special model for a specific music store chain. It puts a lot of different guitars out there for people to choose from, models that couldn't be justified for regular production. It's a great idea. All you have to do is look.

The candy red SG Diablo is one of the sexiest guitars ever

Don't forget the time they put *every* color into an SG:

I saw one of these in person once, and it was actually really cool. It was like looking at super psychedelic tree trunk rings.

Re: Why don't they make SG standards in more than two colors?

I think they do this so next year they can offer more colors and say how unique they are. But really, they have a pretty good idea what sells. People mostly buy black or dark red SGs. The weird colors are harder to sell, I'd guess.

Re: Why don't they make SG standards in more than two colors?

Black.. all that matters... haha.. I agree though. variety would be cool. Bummer is often when they do release a cool color, its on some outrageous priced limited model.. I do like the Pelham one.. I think they release more variety in Epis. (special runs and stuff) Probably to beta test the market..
Iommi playing a white guitar.... just looks wrong.... BUT, I do love the custom with the inlays and all!
