Can someone explane to me why Marshall cabs sound like they have a blanket on em? My1960A sounds distant and a little hissy on the top end while my hughes cab is very present and articulate. Why is this?? Speakers maybe?

Re: Why??(Marshall issues)

Celestion Rockdrivers by H&K in one and the stock G12T75 Celestion 75W speakers in the Marshall.

Hmm...I have to guess that your H&K head simply doesn't ge along with that Marshall cab...G12T75's are known to be the brightest Celestion you can get your hands on...in fact they are my least fav Celestion due to the large amount of highs and the lack of good solid mids...

Re: Why??(Marshall issues)

Wait a minute... Aren't you running the marshall cab at a different impedance than it normally is used at? That might have something to do with it. However, that normally shows up as the amp not sounding right overall instead of just through one cab. Other than that, I can't see what the problem could possibly be. Have you opened the back of the cab and tested the individual speakers (with a multimeter) to see if one of them isn't bad or something? I can't imagine a 1960 sounding dull with those G12T75 celestions in it.

Re: Why??(Marshall issues)

Better yet, 4 vin30s. Those things KILL the GT1275 or whatever they are. I never liked that speaker.

Its good for extreme metal from what I hear, but that's not my thing.

I can't see why it is...it's not tight by any means. My Rockdrivers blow out outta the water and if I could get more rockdrivers, I'd replace the GT's with em.

Re: Why??(Marshall issues)

It'd be interesting to know what those Celestion Rockdrivers really are. They relabeled them for H&K, but it's possible that they're just Vin 30's.....which would explain why they sound good.

Re: Why??(Marshall issues)

IME, 75s are dark and/or compressed compared to say a Greenback or G12H, or similar. V30s are bright and a little compressed.

The 75s have a very sinister almost murky sound, without alot of in your face mids...they have a kind of a low mid spike, and a treble spike which gives it some chunk and cut...but theres a big gap inbetween.. They were voiced with 800s in mind, and really IMO that is the amp they sound best with. Though I do like a plexi type with them as well.

V30s IMO are best suited to older plexi-like Marshalls as they add some agressiveness. I dont care for them in many other marshalls, cos JMP and later marshall amps are voiced more agressively in the mids than Plexis to begin with. Its just too nasty an grinding a sound IMO,and thats why the 75s fit in with the later marshalls better (IMO)

If your amp is SS, chances are the speakers were built around that amp for the best voicing/tone. Otherwise, they'd just throw some 75s or V30s or whatnot in the cabs, as it would be cheaper.

Sounds to me like the 75s are doing what they should tonally, but are prolly not a good match for your amp.

Re: Why??(Marshall issues)

Let me ask this...what is that H&K cab rated at wattage wise???

It's rated at 400 watts, it's a freakin beast! It's possible that they are just a V30 relabeled or close to the sound. I did some research and it seems Hughes's rockdrivers were made by Celestion till sometime recently. They are made by Eminence now.

Re: Why??(Marshall issues)

I am 101% with Rid..again!

The T75's have got to be the worst Celestion ever...I hsve just never gotten a good sound out of them...

Anyway...

As for the speakers in your H&K cab are they Celestions or Eminence??
