Why would you want to make a passive pickup active?

I don't understand the point of Seymour's new device. Don't active pickups have a built-in preamp? How would that affect the sound of a pickup that already sounds good? I'm not bashing it, just trying to understand it because I have been thinking about getting some active pickups.

It's a way to get an active pickup with the looks and some of the tone of a passive you like.

It would be nice to have consistent output levels from all guitars regardless of the pickups voicing. It is also useful for recording if you can go straight to the board, record and then re-amp without having to record multiple parts. These parts would also sound better than that sucky Zakk Wylde doubling that everyone uses today.
