Re: Wilkinson or Floyd Rose?

Its like comparing apples and oranges isn't it? Both trems have their pros and cons.

Floyd
-more capable of wilder whammy antics, eg dive bombs etc
-destroys a lot of tone esp. bass end
-sustain suffers as well
-changing strings is a b**ch

Wilkinson
-arguably more stable than a traditional strat trem
-doesn't suck tone or sustain as much as a floyd
-guitar retains a little bit more vintage look than a floyd equipped one
-doesn't quite handle Vai type whammy abuse as well as a Floyd

All in all, each to their own, although I must say that Floyds do have a very strong 'hair band + spandex' stigma about them. That being said, I have use an Ibanez Edge pro or something and it really is very stable and IMO is better than the original floyd.

Re: Wilkinson or Floyd Rose?

Although I really like Wilkinsons I would not buy/recommend it any more. Wilkinson does not offer any replacement parts except tremolo arms - at least in Europe. Have to get all the Screws from the hardware store - which can be quite difficult. Fender replacement parts do not match.

On the other hand you can get each replacement part for a Schaller Floyd you need.

Re: Wilkinson or Floyd Rose?

gimme a floyd, put the guitar in a case and if it comes out of the case not in tune simply depress the tremolo arm and its back in tune, i dont find it a hassle to setup tbh

Re: Wilkinson or Floyd Rose?

The Wilkinson is a fantastic bridge as well, but i m only using Floyd Rose systems because of the style i play.

Actually, no, they didn't get it right the first time. :)

Ever play a LP with the trapeze tailpiece/bridge combo? It wasn't until 1958 that all of the elements that make us drool over a LP came together.

The original strat was supposed to be made with the Jaguar/Jazzmaster style trem, but right befor final production, that design was scrapped in faver of what we now consider the traditional trem.

Give quality Floyd equipped guitars some time. Heck, it took the LP and Strat a while to achieve legendary status.

Bah trends....
Block this and block that, hardtails blah blah.

I hadn't even posted in the thread yet either! :laugh2:

I personally would take a hardtail, but if you want a trem here's how I see it

- Is the guitar purely for trem work, and have you another guitar you are happy with for your other tones? -> if so go floyd

If it's gonna be your only trem guitar, get one that does it all...

I'd personally go wilkinson though, as I think (much as I love Satch) the "WEEEEEEEEEEEEEEOooooooow" sound where you pull up/bomb down a pinch harmonic is a bit " :/ " really. And thats the only thing I see floyds are significantly better at, due to their increased travel.

Re: Wilkinson or Floyd Rose?

The question you are asking everybody and specially your own self is somehow of an answer itself. I voted Floyd Rose cause I think is the king of trems.
1) It is the best looking trem, the floyd rose logo is a beauty itself
2) It is the easiest used trem cause the tuning is made from those tiny little fast accessed tuners on the bridge
3) You will tune your guitar only 1 time, never again
4) Dave Murray of Iron Maiden allways used a Floyd on his favorite Strat, he knows something.

The loss of sustain and tone is really slight and, believe me, you wil never get disapointed....except if you try to change strings...
