Will a 59 set with Alnico 2 magnets sound more like Seth Lovers?

Re: Will a 59 set with Alnico 2 magnets sound more like Seth Lovers?

62 LP? Is it an SG?

I wouldn’t mess with a 56 year old guitar either.

Yes, aside from name it’s an SG. The neck PAF reads a little higher than the bridge. Once a pot craps out and needs replaced, I’m going to swap the pickups around for the hell of it. No serious mods, though.

I don't know how the seths or antiquities compare but I put a (roughcast) A2 in the '59n of my gibson SG and it took the boom away and made it 'sweeter' sounding. Sounds a lot like Slash neck pickup to me, I can nail that tone with ease.

Yep. That’s what Alnico 2 does to a 59, alright.

Anyone know where the Saturday Night Special fits into all this?

This is what I want to know. I love the soundclips of the SNS and I think the A4's might give me what I want in my next set of pickups. The SNS set intrigues me more than most of the new offerings from SD over the past few years. They should kill in an LP, specially if you order them from MJ and ask her to scatter wind them a bit.

Well just for a update, I am still loving the A2 59 pickup set. I have some 80’s and some 90’s 59’s and some are wound much stronger than today’s 59’s. The 80’s ones were all wound by MJ.

I wish they were zebra but they’re not. They’re all black.

Just got some Polished A2 from AddictionFX, so I’m going to pick the two strongest 59’s and put A2 in them.

Gonna go ahead and put a set in my Axis.

scatter winding (bs marketing term) usually implies hand guiding the wire onto the bobbin in an inconsistent pattern. all duncan buckers are machine wound like the original pafs. some duncan buckers are wound on gibsons old lessona winder that actually wound gibson pups back in the day. not sure about the sns but it seems like a great set. havent been able to put my hands on them yet though

Curious: How does the A2 '59 sound in the neck compared to your Pearly Gates, Lew?

I'm thinking I might drop an A2 or 3 in a '59B, and use it as a neck pickup with a WLH bridge.

It wouldn’t be a fair comparison because my PG’s have nickel covers and the 59’s are uncovered. They do both have Polished A2 magnets.

My sense is that the 59’s push my amp harder and have a more aggressive, more raw, more driving sound. More rock n roll.

The PG’s sound more polite...more restrained. It’s a beautiful sound but the covers do mute the PG’s a little.

These covered PG’s are great for a warmish, jazzy blues tone.

To be honest, I wish they were uncovered but they’re so sealed in wax I don’t want to mess with it.

its not hard to pop the covers off even if they are potted

I did saw through the solder blobs on one of the PG’s but couldn’t budge the cover. I soldered it back on again.

Don’t own a hair drier.

I’ve been able to get waxed on covers off by removing the pickup and putting it face down in a sauce pan on low heat and checking it constantly until melted wax starts coming out through the adjustable screw pole piece holes.

Then the cover slides off fairly easily.

A hair drier would be better...probably wouldn’t need to remove the pickup from the guitar, right?

I’ll have to get one.
