Will the SH-1 59' do the trick?

Re: Will the SH-1 59' do the trick?

500k for the vol pots has the most affect. Audio taper (log) is the most common for the vol. The '59/PG set should be great. The Pg in the neck of my guitar is the best thing that could ever happen to a neck. But then, my LP has a maple cap. If the PG sounds too dark in your guitar, just try an A5 in it (I suspect that's what you will end up needing to do).

Re: Will the SH-1 59' do the trick?

I am in the process of getting all the components and pickups. Thanks and i'll keep you guys posted.

If any of you have a 59' bridge and a Pearly Gate neck, let me know.

So I already have the wires, pots, caps, etc. Pickups on the way. I am going to try it with a set of pearly gates and then will switch the bridge for a 59b to compare.

I'll come back when this is done.
cheers,
Jon

When you get those PGs in, I "advise" you to send your guitar to me for testing.

Blueman, you got a point there.:1:

thank you all again and i can't wait to start this project. Everything here but the pickups.

Yes i have been looking on the bay for days, but ultimately found the best deals here on the forum. I bought a few pickups from Lew and one from another forumite. They had very good prices on them.

Can't wait for them to get here!

Report back once you get them installed.

Re: Will the SH-1 59' do the trick?

Hi all!

I started installing the pickups today and am almost done. I am using 500k audio pots all around and a set of pearly gates. I am using the modern wiring style with independent volume control for the middle position.

I'll keep you all posted when i'm doe.

cheers and thanks for your help,
Jon

Jon,
If you find either of those bridges (especially the '59) too bright or brittle, may I suggest an unoriented alnico 5 (UAO5) magnet. Both are great pickups, but can be a tad bright in the bridge, which the UAO5 really helps. In any case, you should have a great sounding guitar!

Re: Will the SH-1 59' do the trick?

I got to try the guitar a bit last night and this morning and it sounds much much better.

Blueman335, now i know what you mean when you said the Jazz sound bland. The pearly gates on the neck is great. It is still a bit warmer than what I was expecting, but i am going to use it for a while to see if it grows on me, as i like the tone a lot.

The 500k's really opened up the sound a bit. The bridge pg is very well balanced and very interactive with the tone knobs.

Guitardoc, if find myself wanting the bridge to be a tad brighter, i will follow your advice and swap magnets to A5. I have read so people here recommending magnet swap, but have always been lazy to do so. I saw a great thread a few days ago explaining the process step by step (with pics) and it seems much simpler than what i thought.

I am going to A/B this guitar with my friend's les paul custom. On that one i put 500k pots as well and the pickups are stock (496R ceramic humbucker in neck and a 500T at the bridge).

Thank you all again and i can't wait to keep playing this guitar.
cheers,
jon

Re: Will the SH-1 59' do the trick?

Just realise that the Custom will have extra bite due to the ebony board and you'll be ok. My mate had 2 LP's, a nice warm Standard and a Custom that growled and spat. There's no way you could get those two to sound even remotely alike (even if you wanted to)

Make that UnOriented A5 (UOA5). The regular A5 will be too bright and brittle and won't balance the warmth of the neck p'up.

My fave mag for the bridge p'up is A8. Can't raccomend it enough! ;)

HTH,

Will the SH-1 59' do the trick?

Alexr, you are right about the extra bite the classic has. I can hear the difference when playing it unplugged. I think I prefer the standard a bit better. To me the standard sounds more pleasant. However, this could also be due to the 496r and 500t pickups.

Ltkojak, I am sorry, I meant to say that I might want the neck a tad brighter. I am going to go back and edit my previous post. So if I decide to swap magnets, I'll look into the unoriented a5.

Last night I was able to try the pearly gates with different od's and have to say that I was pleasantly surprised. I rarely played this guitar with od's because I never felt satisfied with the sound. Hence my strat got played a lot. Now I have the feeling that the strat will take a break for some time.

Now I am not even sure if I want to try the 59 on the bridge, as I originally planned.

Thank you all again,
Jon

Re: Will the SH-1 59' do the trick?

Sounds like you've got a winner. I love PGs and think that they've got the most versatile and workable tone of just about any hummer made. And can still be tweaked if needed with some mag swaps.

Play it for a while and get used to it. You may want to do some EQing on your amp to dial in the perfect tone. I think you'll decide that you really can't do much better than what you've got now.

Keep us informed of your results.
