I'd love to know which coils have which wires connected to them.

I'm wondering if the thinness you're describing with the split connections is because the coils are out of phase with each other.

you have to do two things to make this work

flip one of the magnets - this gets you the reverse polarity (RP) ... and for the pickup withthe reversed magnet, you also have to treat green as hot and black as ground - this gives you the reverse wired (RW) needed to get hum cancelling

i did this on an H-S-H guitar to get 'inners' and 'outers' to be hum cancelling - works great

Just returned from my technician…
Wiring in now ok, as I wanted it to be in the first place, it has now the split in 2+4 of the inner and outer coils, no magnet flip was needed or any dramatic wiring changes though.
Thing is that i still have the same situation when going split on pos -2, 4, the overall level is still dropping and the sound is way too thin if compared to any of the 2 humbucker when they are fully on.
I asked my technician if he can wire the pickups so in split they will go series and not parallel but he say that he can't do that with the super switch and he thinks that it might require another switch of some type.

What do you guys think ?
Phostenix, I would much appreciate it if you think you can come up with a diagram allowing split in series with the super switch as you mentioned earlier.

I already made it. I just didn't post it. :)

It's a little wonky, 'cause you have to change the coil sequence on one of the pickups to get the series combinations to come out in phase. I fought with this wiring for a while until somebody posted a DiMarzio drawing that gave me the clue to solve the puzzle. :)

Of course, my drawing is based on the idea that the black & white wires will be the inside coils and the red & green wires will be the outside coils. So, we may have to fiddle with it a little.

What wiring did you end up with to get the insides & outsides together?

as for the black & white wires = inside coils and red & green wires = outside coils, i will send an e-mail to the support and see what Seymour says :1:

Hi,

The outer coils of our humbuckers are South in polarity and have Red as Hot and Green and Ground.

The inner coils of the humbuckers are North in polarity and have Black as Hot and White as ground.

When the inner coils are on they might be in parallel, so that would make it sound weaker than a true humbucker. Wiring them in series might help.

Well, that's what I've always read about SD pickups. My drawings are based on that. But, when we did the other setup, we got the wrong coil of the Neck pup.

Can you post a pic of what you ended up with that got you the correct coils?

Well, that's what I've always read about SD pickups. My drawings are based on that. But, when we did the other setup, we got the wrong coil of the Neck pup.

Can you post a pic of what you ended up with that got you the correct coils?

Would it be the right coil of the neck pickup if you flipped the magnet?

Flipping the magnet would reverse the phase of the pickup, but it won't change which wires are connected to which coils.

Here's a drawing of what he wired up:

He approached it differently than I did in my previous drawings, but the result is the same. If you look at position 2 on the 5-way, you'll see that the Neck splits are tied to ground and the Bridge splits are tied to the output. If you look at position 4, the Neck splits are tied to the output and the Bridge splits are tied to ground.

The way it "should" work is that if both sets of splits are tied to the output, you'll get the outside coils. If both sets of splits are tied to ground, you'll get the inside coils. With these pups, one set of splits has to go to the output and the other has to go to ground to get those combinations.


I've put together a set of drawings to explain how this is supposed to work that I will post in a bit.

I wonder if any of the readers hear had the experience with series vs. parallel on single coil, someone who actually did it on same pups, I wouldn’t go for another wiring attempt on my guitar unless it really works, the volume and presence increase.

I've put together a set of drawings to explain how this is supposed to work that I will post in a bit.

OK, here's how this switching stuff is supposed to work in the land of Seymour duncan. :)

Here is the standard layout for 2 SD humbuckers:

From this, you can see:

The inside coils should be the Black & White wires
The outside coils should be the Red & Green wires
The inside coils should have North magnets
The outside couls should have South magnets

That all matches the email you got from SD Tech Support.

I've also put on there + and - signs to show the electrical polarity of the coils. This becomes important when you start splitting the coils.

So, you normally connect the Green wires to ground, the splits (Red & White) to each other, and the Black wires are the hot outs that goes to the pickup selector switch.

Notice that the electrical poarities always connect - to + (or vice versa). The 2 coils of a humbucker are wired - to + to - to +.

Now, if you want the outside coils in parallel, you do this:

The splits are now connected to the output (the same connection as the Black wires). The Green wires stay connected to ground and the Black wires are still the hot outputs to the pup switch. Notice that you can do this without separating the splits - they can stay tied together.

This effectively shorts out or "shunts" the inside coils, leaving only the outside coils connected to the output.

To get the inside coils in parallel, the Green wires & the Black wires don't change. You just switch the connection to the splits. Now the splits are connected to ground. This effectively shorts out or "shunts" the outside coils, leaving only the inside coils connected to the output.

This is a good time to point out the magnetic polarities. Notice that when you connect the inside or outside coils together, you have coils with matching magnets. These combinations won't be hum cancelling. They are in phase electrically, so they will sound fine - they just won't be hum cancelling. This is why PRS, Peavey, and others who connect pickups like this flip the magnet in one of the pickups.

Then, you have something like this:

Now when you start connecting inside & outside coils together, you have a North magnet paired with a South magnet


Note that if you reverse the magnet on a SD pickup, you will also have to reverse the leads in order to maintain electrical phase. This drawing is just to show the alternating magnet polarities.

OK, let's move on to connecting coils in series. Here's where it gets a little more complicated.

Take another look at our original configuration:

We've got a couple of problems. Both of the outside coils are grounded & with the splits tied together, we've got no way to connect coils in series.

So, here's what has to happen:

This is why I put the electrical polarity symbols on the drawings. We have to re-order one of the pickups. I've chosen the Neck pup in this example. The White wire is now connected to ground, the Black & Green wires are connected to each other, and the Red wire is the hot output. This is NOT wired out of phase with the Bridge pickup. It is still wired - to + to - to +. Ground is still connected to a - lead & the hot output is still a + lead.
