Wiring 2 P-Rails with 5-way super switch?

Re: Wiring 2 P-Rails with 5-way super switch?

You guys are amazing. Thanks so much for the info. Again...I'll have to re-read it several times and have a look at my guitar before it will make sense to me.

Dr. Newcenstein...I had to go out of town so I can't confirm how it's wired right now. An amp-builder friend of mine installed the pickups for me and I just asked him for the combinations I have now and I don't know what the wiring looks like.

I mentioned to him what I wanted to do and this is the info he emailed to me:

"Adding a small switch would do the trick. Maybe one of the pots can be
replaced with a pull pot. I forget the spacing and if any of the pots
make contact with the PCB or not.

What it would do is: when the switch is engaged, positions 1 and 2 would
be the same (parallel coils for the bridge pickup). Positions 4 and 5
would also be the same (parallel coils for the neck pickup). Position 3
would be parallel of both pickups in that configuration. So the 5-way
switch would only have 3 selections (but with two of the selections
doubled for the outer-most selections)."

I would be quite happy with that if that could be done easily. I was hoping to replace the tone control with a P/P switch. I don't know the value of the tone pot in the guitar now but I have a 500ohm pot with a P/P switch that I could potentially use.

Would either of you guys be able to provide me with a picture of what the wiring would look like with the P/P tone pot and the three new selections?

Again...you guys rule!

Thanks so much.

Re: Wiring 2 P-Rails with 5-way super switch?

Here's another wiring method that would get pretty close to your original 10 selections using a 5-way super switch and a toggle/push-pull. I've been using this setup in my P-Rails equipped guitar and I'm really happy with it. The options are:

Toggle up:
1. Bridge P90
2. Bridge Series Bucker
3. Both P90s
4. Neck Series Bucker
5. Neck P90

Toggle Down:
1. Bridge Parallel Bucker
2. Bridge Rail
3. Both Rails
4. Neck Rail
5. Neck Parallel Bucker

Here is the schematic:

Re: Wiring 2 P-Rails with 5-way super switch?

Hey Bobbie...thanks for that. I think this is one schematic I'd seen before that I was interested in but couldn't find recently. It has its pros and cons in terms of accessibility of different modes/tones, just like any other setup, but it definitely includes all of the possible choices which is very cool.

Cheers!!!

Sorry if bringing this thread back from the dead!

The wiring scheme in this diagram seems like it would work great for a Strat project I'm putting together. What I'm wondering is if anyone can expand on it and show how I would wire this with 1 master volume and 2 tone pots. It would be greatly appreciated! I have most of the parts coming in, and I'm thinking of ways I can hook up the 2 p-rails, and this scheme looks awesome.

Thanks in advance for any help!

Re: Wiring 2 P-Rails with 5-way super switch?

Old thread, I know.. I have a wiring for the 5 way switch that provides
Hb Hb/Hn Hn Rn Rb+Rn
Pb Pb/Pn Pn PAFn Rn

with a toggle switch or "smooth dial* blend between the two but you need one dial committed to the stacked pot for the blend...

Adding another push-pull switch can invert the bridge for Rb Rb~Pn and Hb~Hn but it seems like a lot of effort for modes that aren't used. ...

How many people use the bridge rail solo or bridge as PAF?
