While all pots do not have to be connected via ground wire to each other, they do all have to be connected to one of the 3 primary ground points: bridge, jack, and controls.
However, those 3 ground points must contact the same point, no matter where that point is (on the pot, on the jack, or at the bridge).
The problem is with 4 pots and a bridge and a jack with their own ground wires all converging at the same point, it's messy. Not to mention every time you add another ground wire to the pile, one pops loose. You can strip and twist them all into a giant metal dreadlock smothered in solder, but there's a high chance the solder won't coat all the wires well, so it's just easier and cleaner to connect all the pots to each other, then have the bridge and jack grounds connected to the back of separate pots. That way you know each one has a good connection, and that everything's part of the ground system.
