that's a first. i finished practicing and turned the standby off and left the power on. it must have been left on for about 12 hours before i saw that it was left on. i bet the tubes aged a bit. :nervous:

I don't even leave my amps plugged in. Kinda ensures this will never happen.

Re: woops, i left the amp on overnight

I have done this once or twice in the past.

My first reaction is "OH **** I HOPE IT'S OKAY" and then it's "OH **** It's gona sound GREAT right now!"

and with the tubes that warmed-up, it usually sounds pretty damn awesome.

Hehe, this thread appears every now and again. I try to leave my amps on, but my wife keeps turning them off! :)

Re: woops, i left the amp on overnight

Lots of tubes are pretty rugged and so I don't worry about that kind of thing much.

my amp is in my bedroom and I can't sleep with a big green jewel light on so I'd have to go out of town before I'd accidentally leave my amp on for much longer than a few hours.

Don't worry about it. My Fender has spent years sitting on stand-by.

Re: woops, i left the amp on overnight

I think GearJoneser left one on for about a month...lol

Re: woops, i left the amp on overnight

Think of all the tube based electronics equipment in the 1950's, 1960's and 1970's that was never turned off.
We would switch our oscilliscopes, signal generators and various meters to on and leave them on indefinetly.
Constantly turning the tubes on and off does two things. It causes unstable/erratic opertion and does more to shorten a tubes life that leaving the unit powered up.

Re: woops, i left the amp on overnight

what was that story about the radio station that never turned their equipment off in many many years ?
and the first time they did, it didn't come back up !

Re: woops, i left the amp on overnight

I worked in radio for many years before computers took over. We had cart and reel decks and consoles that hadn't been turned off for any real amount of time for decades. That's just the way it was all over. Think of all those capstan motors constantly spinning just as happy as can be. And yes...try and turn off a motor that's been on since you were born and you might just have a problem.

Re: woops, i left the amp on overnight

Being in the on position will wear out your tubes and stress everything, but in standby it can be on for a long time with no negative effect.

I actually left an amp on standby for 3 months, and the tubes are still fine. It was my Gibson Goldtone which doesn't have a jewel light anywhere to be seen, and the on/standby/off switch is on the back panel, so I never noticed it. That's the amp I play the least even though it's a great amp.

This kind of abuse can create very dangerous and irreparable hairline cracks in the tube sockets. Your amp has become destabilized and may explode the next time you use it at volume. Send your amp to me immediately and I will see to its safe destruction. To be safe, you should also send your entire pedal chain and any guitars that might have come into contact with the amp in the past 30 days.

You're welcome!

Re: woops, i left the amp on overnight

I routinely leave amps on with music running through for 96 hours plus. If a part or tube is going to fail on me, it normally happens pretty quick.

Some CRT TVs were designed so the tube heaters stayed on unless you turned off the power completely.

You're almost like Eddie when he was testing the new 5150.
