Worst pickups you have ever owned?

Re: Worst pickups you have ever owned?

New JBs dont sound like old JBs. Same with 59s.

Old JB from the early/mid 80s in a alder strat is a wonderful thing.
Swap in an RCA5.

V7/V8 so bad they are not worthy of labels.

JB. For such a celebrated pickup it is really really bad.

Steve's Special. It will suck the soul out of your guitar.

Honorable mention: P-Rails. It was a good concept but the end result is underwhelming. Feels like it could be tuned better...

I remember those pickups. Yeah, those were pretty bad. And the guitar weighed a good 20lbs.

Re: Worst pickups you have ever owned?

ibanez powersound pups SUUUUCKED when i tried them. dead and lifeless sounding in the neck and harsh and over the top in the bridge. aww full

Re: Worst pickups you have ever owned?

Squier Affinity stock ceramic single coils.

Cleans sound fine, but the overdrive is harsh and sterile. I have some GFS pickups and a trem block to fix this thing

Re: Worst pickups you have ever owned?

People use them but... It's difficult to fathom why Fender would put a ceramic single coil in any guitar with the Fender (as opposed to Squier) name on it. Even the Squier Standard's pickups are better.

Re: Worst pickups you have ever owned?

1.)Bareknuckle Pickups - highly overrated pickups IMO! I tried different models (VH2 bridge (this one was actually ok) / VH2 neck (total crap) / Emerald neck (ok but too wooly) / Emerald bridge (semi-ok) / 20th Anniversary models (thin and trebly) / Mule set (way too thin sounding)
2.)EMG 85X and EMG 60AX - total muddy mess
3.)DiMarzio PAF Joe / Air Norton (muddy, choked pick attack)

Worst pickups you have ever owned?

The worst pickups in any guitar I have ever come across? In fact the worst ever guitar was my old Futurama II. Made by Selmer in the U.K. - the ones made my Hagstrom in Sweden were ok.
Really bad microphonic pickups with an interesting slide adjustment. You could not set the height though.
Really thin tinny sound, zero sustain - just awful.

Re: Worst pickups you have ever owned?

Almost forgot , a Friend of mine wants me to Replace His 80's Strat bridge pickup (had been changed to Duncan JB ) <- I think He said it's 90's , but it sounds like Total Dogcrap. Dont know if it's defective or what but i cant believe how muffly it sounds in the Ash strat .

Re: Worst pickups you have ever owned?

I was absolutely most disappointed by the Dimarzio Bluesbucker. I have great respect for Dimarzio, and I used the Norton for awhile, but the Bluesbucker seemed to take away what's good about buckers without adding what's good about P90's. It just had a dull, thudding attack with no guts underneath.

I don't like 500Ts. I don't want to say they're bad, I just want more sparkle on top than they offer.

I had some Blackouts that I really hated, but I'm not sure what variety they were. They came stock in a Schecter. They sounded muted to me. In all fairness, I never even tried to adjust the rest of my rig to accommodate them - never gave them a chance. They got yanked immediately.

I can't ever think of a time I heard the JB described as muffly. But it is most likely a wiring problem. You won't know until you get in there and take a look.

I'd guess that he doesn't like the JB with 250K pots. I don't think it sounds bad, but I personally prefer the JB's far more aggressive personality with 500K pots.

Re: Worst pickups you have ever owned?

Bought an Epi LP off Ebay, somebody had replaced the pickups with EMG 81/85, thought it would be a cheap Zakk model clone. Sounded awwwwful. I pulled the stock hum pickups out of the Jackson I had at the time and it sounded much better, eventually put the 496R/500T from my Flying V in before selling the V. I loved the Epi after that, but EMGs in a Epi LP = ...NO.
