Would like aedvice- my 50 Watt Hiwatt ain'yt cutting the mustard

The Hiwatt is a kind of specialized amp. I run my 1974 Hiwatt Custom 50 watt through a 4x12 Marshall greenback cabinet.

First off, no doubt my Custom 50 has the worlds penultimate cleans besides Vox/Matchless, and Fender. Thats a fact. Its gorgeous, and you can get lost it for days-its not the worlds best like the like the Fender Blackface and not as chimey ( although oit does do chime more than even a Fender) as Vox, but is it is a big round warm 3D clean that just impels you to keep playing.

But , I see why people preferably run the 100 watters with the Hiwatts. The reason being is not cause it ain't loud enough, but rather that when the Hiwatt 50 watt hits its sweet spot in tonality, then yes, it bottoms out in headroom before it gets loud enough( for me).

I can see for sure that a 100 watt Hiwatt is what i need.Me and everyone and their dog. Ain't gonna happen- costs too much ( for me).

Here's my question- I was thinking of i got a 2x12 1936 Marshall cab to stick on top of the 4x12, that it would bring everything up to ear level and create a loud enough sound at the sweet spot of the 50 watt Hiwatt to make it all good?

Creambacks might also increase volume a bit over the 25watters, as in volume on 3 vs volume on 3.

......You're deaf Jerry!

Agreed, I think that is the first time I've heard "HiWatt" and "not loud enough" used in the same sentence.

Maybe try a real HiWatt cab with Fane speakers?

Maybe there is some wax build up, try these?

I'm totally in agreement with several other posters here, "You've got to be fooking kidding me right?" Lets take an efficient head like the Hiwatt Custom 50 and run it through a quad set of Greenbacks. No **** it will crap out. That's why I use my early 70's Hiwatt cab w/Fane 50's with my Marshall JTM50 and 1959 JMP heads because I don't prefer speaker distortion over output distortion. The Fanes won't crap out on me anytime soon either. Use a quad set of late 80's to early 90's Celestion G12T-75's if you can't locate a good quad of Fanes.

Great reponses! :9:

It is dependent on the guitar also. I played the Hiwatt with a Strat last night and it was bright and really loud enough.

Well, a strat w/single coils and greenback speakers tend to do that.

I think you should probably just give it to me? I mean I'm down to trade, want the wife???

Neither are your English skills. The term is "cut the muster," as in a military man being ready to present.

Fanes. A Hiwatt NEEDS Fanes, Jer. Do this one up right!

Several artists like Jimmy Page have done the (Hiwatt head/Marshall cab) thing like Jimmy Page w/Led Zeppelin at the Royal Albert Hall although, Jimmy most likely used multiple cabs plus being run through the FOH which makes a helluva difference.

While that's true, the Hiwatt SAPs that Jimmy Page was using at the time are a lot closer to a Marshall than a DR103/504.

The reason you do not hear it as aloud......it does not wanna bark your ears straight to hell...
Try speaking while playing it.....
There you will realise just how loud it actually is!

Huh? I have a Catalinbread RAH clone pedal. Catalinbread utilized the "front end" or preamp topology of Jimmy Page's actual Hiwatt used for Led Zeppelin's RAH performance. Catalinbread calls these amp recreations "Foundation" pedals as they copy and emulate an actual amp's preamp design (manufacturer/model). The tone and EQ of this pedal couldn't be any more different than my Marshall 1959 JMP amp.

Jimmy Page didn't use standard Hiwatts; his amps had the Special All Purpose "SAP" preamp which incorporated an extra 12AX7 gain stage and a few other changes. The resulting tone is still Hiwatt, but with a definite Marshall flavor. Page's Celestion speakers also helped to emphasize that.

Also is your Marshall 1959 original or a reissue? If it's original, what year was it made? Marshall changed the 1959 circuit several times over the course of the original production run, so an early example from 1967 isn't nearly as bright or gainy as one from '72 or '73.
