Would You Buy This?

Re: Would You Buy This?

From what I've seen and heard of the ENGL Screamer combo, its almost like owning a Mesa Boogie! Hellz Yez! I'd say buy it! I'd compare them to a Boogie Mark IV. I wonder if any of my forum mates agree with that assessment?

If you like the Mesa Boogie style of AMP then an ENGL will put you in the ball park tonewise. Screamers are played by forum members Strangesound (fusion) and Marinblues (Blues & Classic Rock). Listen to these guys on their Soundclick.com pages to get an idea of how these amps sound. Marinblues has video clips on Youtube. Screamers can also do some wicked drop tuned Metal.

These amps can cost you $1,000 - $2,000 dollars new as they are chiefly sold in Europe and are just gaining a foothold in the US.

Re: Would You Buy This?

I have never played one, but a friend has an Engl Powerball and it sounds wonderful. I would love to trade him out of it........ain't gonna happen.

Re: Would You Buy This?

Screamer combos retail at 2500 AUD... that's around 2250 USD doing a straight currency conversion. Straight currency conversions aren't a great indicator, but if I were given that deal I would definitely take it. Take that with a grain of salt though, I would buy many things at American prices - and often do.

They retail 1250 USD where you are...

Make sure you talk to some people here about the controversial topic of Engl's build quality.

Re: Would You Buy This?

There are some "duels" here on that subject, some people say they look like computers inside(hint, tape) some people argue that other stuff is great, I dont know, just do some searches here, you gonna find some fun threads.

hell i'm not going to subscribe to the naysayers any more. my new policy is to accept that a generally great builder manufactures generally great stuff. if i start listening to all that stuff i might start second-guessing the things i already know to be true. like my tt50 for instance. i'm sure there are people who would dissuade me from it, but after having it all weekend, i'm pretty impressed.

i'm not good at going against general opinions on build quality, so i prefer to stay out of it. i don't know enough about the circuitry to really discern. otherwise i'd always be like :smash:

it's also worth noting that if you're mostly a home user you don't necessarily need an amp that is built to the high standards of, say a Soldano or Victoria. That kind of build quality pays for itself when your amp has to jump around in the back of a van on a 600km trip or gets dropped by a stagehand. That's where typical major manufacturer cost saving tricks like mounting an amp's control pots and valve sockets onto a cheap PCB or sourcing the transformers based on who gives them the cheapest quote becomes a problem.

Engls are built to average modern production-line standards. Roughly equivalent to non-handwired Marshalls like the JVM, Crates, US Peaveys or the cheaper all-tube fenders. I'd have no problem recommending them to a home user and gentle occasional gigger. They have a reputation in Germany as being something of a local Peavey, and have somehow managed to sell and market (or at least price) themselves as semi-boutique outside of Germany. neat trick if you can pull it off.

I think the controversy over Engl build quality is not that they're badly built per se, but more that buyers outside of Germany open up their prized, semi-expensive Engl amps and see 'crate' or 'hot rod deluxe' build rather than Rivera or Mesa.

It'll probably kill that Laney flat, by the way.

Re: Would You Buy This?

I love Screamers. They are one of the nicest sounding and flexible combos out there and well worth the money. Go for it, it should annihalate most 50W combos out there. But if you ever come across a Sovereign at a decent price it will be even better.

Engl really is more like german peavey, i never got why everybody outside of Germany thinks they are boutique or anything like that.

Re: Would You Buy This?

the tt is built with everything in pcb anyway so the engl wont be a compromise on build quality.
