Wouldn't it be cool if they made a pickup that.....

Passive EQ can be done with just an LRC circuit - coil, resistor and cap. The way I did it was like a reverse Varitone, where instead of creating a notch in one frequency, it created a spike. But to get the peak Q wider than just a spike, it required a more sizable choke coil than the 1.5H Radio Shack type in Varitone circuits. It worked, but I never got it working the way I wanted.
Seems like a lot of trouble to go through for the same outcome.

Couldn't that be accomplished with an onboard active eq? Or just an outboard eq for that matter.

EQ is important, but simply boosting or cutting frequencies doesn't change how those frequencies feel and respond -- the envelopes of various frequencies pretty much stay the same. You can EQ a Custom Custom, but it isn't going to sound like a Jazz N, much less a 50s Strat pup. It's like the difference between a SansAmp and the real thing: superficial, but most people wouldn't notice the difference.

that bottom coil might be too far from the strings. most stack designs are to cancel noise

I am not thinking the coils would act independently. The switch could connect the bottom coil to the top coil. The top could be maybe 4.5K winds and the bottom 2.5k. In the off position, you would get 4.5K the switch would join the coils to give you 6K.

Another passive tone variant:

Put a hummelbucker in parallel. That makes a very glassy sound because the resonance peak is now at very high frequency, higher than any reasonable pickup naturally is. You can lower the frequency of the resonance peak with a load capacitor, to a value that in between your current unloaded parallel value and what the pickup has in series.

To my knowledge StingRay basses are the only conventional humbucker equipped electrics that comes from the factory in parallel. I'd like to see a new model of 6 string guitar that does that

I did have a set of double creme that Theodie made from Zebra/Reverse Zebra coils. He used a Pearly Gates/APH-1 for the neck. I broke up the set when I sold them, but I think beaubrummels bought the neck. I am not sure what he paired it with to try it out.

I tried it with a T-Deco bridge and then a Jazz bridge, and a Pearly bridge. All close neighbors and all stellar combos. Very clear and even neck. Not as bright as a Jazz/Pearly neck and not as soft on the top as a A2P or WLH. Right in the middle. I suspect it might be close to what the custom shop Pearlies are like, based on descriptions.

Would love a pckup that would allow me to boost my mids or go from medium output to high output with a push/pull

Have you tried the Triple Shot humbucker rings? They allow for either coil off (single coil/half-humbucker), parallel, and series (traditional humbucker). When you’re using hotter pickups, that allows for a pretty good boost (trad. humbucker vs half-hum., for example.
