Wow.. but, uh oh. But, wow!

Today I was in the mood to experiment and I remembered that a lot of people with Marshall Plexis and such put their volumes on 10 and control the level with the guitar.

So I tried it with my Fender amp.. I had to turn the bass down to avoid flub and tigten it up a bit (down to 4) and turn the treble up (to 7) to compensate for the high end roll off - but WOW. That's the sound. I guess this is why I always had more fun playing clean - because the pedal takes something away. The sound was as thick as molasses in January. I wish I could crank her like that at every gig...

Anyway, now I'm concerned. This one's 22 watts and my Traynor is going to be 50. It might blow my head right off trying to get that one to sing.. unless putting the jumper across the channels is the magic trick that gets overdrive at lower volumes..

Re: Wow.. but, uh oh. But, wow!

Nope. No magic trick with jumpering. You get the same volume (max volume) on any non-master volume amp when you crank it. Running two channels only drives the front end harder making for a thicker and more distorted sound, but that sound will still be at window shaking volumes because there is no master volume. Get a Weber Mass 100 for your Traynor and you'll be far happier with your purchase.

Re: Wow.. but, uh oh. But, wow!

Yeah, that Traynor is going to be super loud. Great stuff.

Re: Wow.. but, uh oh. But, wow!

50 watts won't be THAT much louder than 22. But yeah, if the Fender is too loud, the Traynor will obviously be too loud.

Re: Wow.. but, uh oh. But, wow!

The Fender isn't too loud, I'd say it's just right.

I play with very little distortion - enough to thicken my leads up a tad but not so much that I can't strum full chords cleanly until I dig in for leads.

I might miss the tube rectifier though - then again I do find myself wishing the amp had a tighter low end at times.

Re: Wow.. but, uh oh. But, wow!

6v6 tubes tend not to have the tighest low end. when i run my deluxe hot i keep the bass pretty low 2 or 3 isnt uncommon. i bring it up till it starts getting a little farty on the low strings then roll it back a touch

Re: Wow.. but, uh oh. But, wow!

Loud?compared to what?your stereo?Don,t ever plug into a 100-120 watt double stack,if you think that,s loud. You might scare yourself to deaf!
Stick it on a stage [22w] and youd be lucky to hear it over the crowd talking!
I use an 80 watt with a 400 watt SD stereo quad box,at home!!!:kabong:i don,t do any live playing these days.

Re: Wow.. but, uh oh. But, wow!

20w with a good speaker is plenty on stage for me most of the time. if i need more volume than that the sound guy is probably gonna put me thru the pa.

Re: Wow.. but, uh oh. But, wow!

What are you playing? Dinner music?Sorry to sound a little sarcastic ;but that,s a practise amp!If you want to play something that "shakes",even miked up ,that won,t cut it!All these psuedo matal pedals and amp modelling things ,aren,t the real thing.the real thing is LOUD and Harmonic Distortion[produced by your output valves] The louder you "re-inforce distortion ,the worse it sounds ;Viz ,the same for Distortion pedals ,the louder you go ;the worse they sound. If you want loud and clean ,you still need a loud amp.
"THROW AWAY Your FUZZ BOXES[Distortion boosters ,tube screamers and other names for FUZZ BOXES]

Re: Wow.. but, uh oh. But, wow!

yes i play dinner music in a club so people cant talk to each other without shouting.

where are you playing that a cranked deluxe is a practice amp?

Re: Wow.. but, uh oh. But, wow!

i say we find this guy...tie him to a chair next to a deluxe....crank the deluxe...and take turns playing for a few hours.

Then ask him if he still thinks its dinner music, lol. Im sure the response would be "uh what...did you say something?"

Re: Wow.. but, uh oh. But, wow!

Wot,s that ?a cracked dead duck?.I,m already deaf;hey!Maybe you could lend it to Vai and co next time they,re doing a G3 concert; And mike it up through a 12000-12000 watt front of house amp. "throw away your fuzz boxes" Ya see ;i,m old school . Not "Toy Amps" "Merry Christmas" santas helpers.

You somehow assume I am not in a band and I don't gig.

I've played outdoor gigs where my Deluxe *almost* had enough volume, so I think it's a pretty **** loud amp. I couldn't play it at the breakup point I wanted to- it was much more distorted- but make no mistake with no guitar out of the monitors I could hear myself just fine.

Re: Wow.. but, uh oh. But, wow!

i use my deluxe for lots of gigs, if im outdoors ill run it thru a closed back 2x12 cab rather than the internal speaker. its not a do all amp but if you want to run the volume at 6 or higher to get the tubes working its a great club amp. very few clubs will let you pin even a 50w amp

That's basically what I do with mine. I don't "pin" my amps - when the volume's on 10 the guitar vol ends up at 2 and a half maybe. I like just enough cookin' tubes to make my leads sing but chords clean.
