YJM Fury tone chart questions

I was looking at the info on the YJM Fury pickups and the tone chart for both the neck/middle and bridge pickups seem to be off.




I found an older PDF tone chart that has different info on the tone of the pickups that seems closer to what I'm hearing...here's a pic of it.



Anyone else have thoughts on the newer tone chart? If it was correct I'd think the pickups would be much thinner and brighter sounding. It seems to me that the numbers on the older chart (7/7/6 for the neck and 7/8/7 for the bridge) are closer to the actual tone I hear.

Just wanted to see what others who have the pickups thought.

Well, I think it is a general guide. My guess is that 2 different people did the charts. And those 2 heard things differently. To my ears, the old chart seems closer, but I am not sure if this is a website problem, or that the EQ curve was changed on purpose. In any case, it is only one thing to help decide, but I agree, it seems off.

While I was considering getting the pickups I was looking at the current tone chart and it made me come really close to NOT buying the pickups as I thought they would sound thin...especially on the bridge pickup. I checked out lots of reviews and videos and decided to take a chance because they didn't sound on any of the videos like what the current tone chart described. All of the tone charts for the other SD pickups I have seem to be really close to what I hear, so I was afraid that the chart for the YJM's was right until I did more research.

Pretty simple, it's either a mistake/typo, or someone changed it. Either way the old numbers are what I would've assigned when it was released. If they deliberately changed it, then it's because someone thought the new numbers are better for some reason. Don't let it deter you from buying the pickups. They are what they are.

Oh I'm happy with the tone, but looking at the current chart I almost didn't take the chance and get them for fear that they would be too bright and thin sounding.

Right. And that'd be the unfortunate consequence of a little typo somewhere. Here's hoping they get it fixed...

I agree. They're awesome pickups. I have a couple more coming for another Strat copy I'm modifying.

The bridge position unit has a different rod magnet length "stagger" pattern to a typical vintage style replacement pickup for Stratocaster. I like the extra grunt, midrange emphasis and string-to-string volume balance that this brings.

By comparison, I find the neck/middle position annoyingly bright. I have never settled on my idea of the correct treble to bass balance until recently.

In another of the OP's threads, Frank Falbo mentioned that the STK-10 bobbins are plastic. Consequently, it is possible to manipulate the rod magnets. (NOTE - This will have consequences for the warranty.) I am experimenting with a stagger profile more like the Vintage Stack models. I am also tempted to swap magnets under the plain strings. Obviously, my modifications will be at variance with Yngwie's specifications but, then, I am not attempting to sound like him.

To me the neck/middle pickups are not too bright...especially when I compare them with other guitars I have with single coil pickups. To me they sound thicker overall, but each persons taste is different.

I am interested in finding out more about possibly swapping out the magnets with some that aren't as tall, so please let me know if you do this, what you used and how it turned out.

I agree...the current tone charts are off.
