Re: You Have To Buy A New Gibson or PRS - Which Do You Choose?

As someone who has owned a McCarty Hollowbody Spruce, yes, PRS does make full hollowbody guitars. The wood where the bridge screws to is not run across like a semi-hollowbody. True, they don't come with trapeze tailpieces, but who really cares when it's constructed (and sounds) like a hollowbody.

I like the sound of Gibsons better, but the playability, fit and finish of PRS is so, so much better. I've sold off any Gibsons I've had because they didn't play right and I've sold off a half a dozen PRS over the years because I just couldn't get them to sound amazing. Sure, they sounded pretty good, but there was always something lacking. I've tried multiple pickup swap outs to get the "magic" so to speak, but they just didn't bark the right way so they were unloaded. The '96 McCarty was probably the only guitar I thought about holding onto because it almost had the low mid Les Paul thing going on and I'd say the rest reminded me of SGs, it's more of a upper mid chirp, little extra clarity thing. Visually, the one PRS I regret selling is the silver sparkle metallic one I had. I loved playing live with that thing and maybe with Filtertrons or something it could have been a keeper, but I decided to ditch both Gibson and PRS and go more towards Fenders (and eventually) Gretsch.

If I had to choose between the two, I'll take playability first so it's a win for PRS in my book.

For me I'd choose Gibson. My dad's first electric, and subsequently the one I started playing, was a Hondo II LP copy. The first guitar I personally bought 6 years ago was an Epi LP Custom, which is still my #1 go to guitar. If I had to choose between all the Gibson LP models, it would be either a Traditional or a Custom. I personally like the extra weight, never been a fan of the weight relieved models.

Easy choice, because PRS doesn't make an explorer.

Are you sure about that?

3k puts u in Gibson custom shop range. This is the only level of Gibson with the same consistency as PRS. It's a win-win in this case.

Re: You Have To Buy A New Gibson or PRS - Which Do You Choose?

PRS puts out some of the best, out of the box guitars with impeccable fit and finish outside of small builder, hand built guitars...

That said I've never played one I really liked so Gibson all day.

PRS Santana Custom Shop, just like the original.

Considering that every last guitar PRS has ever made is completely hideous to me, I'd have to say Gibson.

Oh yeah... Totally....

Absolutely hideous compared to a Gibson which looks acceptable...

That's a silly question, as much as I dislike Gibson noone can ignore that fact that no two guitars are equal. If I were given the choice of taking a 3000 Gibson or a 3000 PRS for free (the only reason I would spend 3Ks on either one) then I would try all the PRSi and Gibsons I could get in my hands that qualified and then decided on a single individual guitar on its' particular unique merits that wouldn't necessarily be indicative of either the line or brand.

So sorry, no dice.

Re: You Have To Buy A New Gibson or PRS - Which Do You Choose?

CAn you actually play all of the guitars you already have?

Re: You Have To Buy A New Gibson or PRS - Which Do You Choose?

I'd go for an ES-335. A PRS Custom 24 in Leprechaun Tooth green looks pretty classy to.

Re: You Have To Buy A New Gibson or PRS - Which Do You Choose?

I think it's one thing to be a Chinese knock-off maker that replicates American premium guitars, but for one American premium maker to borrow so heavily from another just seems wrong. At least with Jackson or Charvel, you could say they make they Super Strat that Fender is unwilling to make. G&L and Heritage can claim some degree of ownership over the designs they "copy". Suhr and PRS don't really have anything like that going for them. They just seem to sell premium copies.

Re: You Have To Buy A New Gibson or PRS - Which Do You Choose?

Since I'm only interested in LP's and $3000 is not enough for a new one I'd go with PRS Custom 22...

But if I really had that kind of money to spend on guitar I would always go with ESP...but wait! ESP decided to rebrand and screw things for everyone when they decided to move Standard Series into their custom shop (calling it now ESP original) and charging $5000 for Eclipse...needless to say they don't make my model of Eclipse anymore...

So yeah...

Re: You Have To Buy A New Gibson or PRS - Which Do You Choose?

Well, if we are talking the 2015 Gibsons with all the wacky add-ons that I don't need or want, I would probably have to say PRS.

Re: You Have To Buy A New Gibson or PRS - Which Do You Choose?

Considering that every last guitar PRS has ever made is completely hideous to me, I'd have to say Gibson. That doesn't even get into my general dislike of the way PRSs feel to play.

I don't even understand this. How could you not look at several PRSes and think they're gorgeous?

I love my Gibson, but recently, I've been playing my PRS import quite a bit this past week, mainly because I saw Shaman's Harvest last Sunday, and the rhythm guitarist blew me away.

Probably the same way someone can say they don't like Dimebag's playing, or chocolate cake, or Breaking Bad, or Apple, or Beyoncé, or Bob Dylan, or Android, or Tom Hanks, or Honda, or Nike, or Anna Kendrick, or Instagram, or Starbucks, or Maxwell House, or…

Is this making sense yet?

I don't think this picture is making the positive impact you think it is. That SC looks like a little kid made it sitting next to that gorgeous Les Paul ;)

That said, here's a pic of my old 250, so it's not like I hate the looks of them...
I look at those two and my first thoughts this: I know the PRS will play like butter. The lp is a crap shoot no matter how pretty it is.

I don't know what is not to understand. I just think they're ugly. How does one explain ugly? I think their body shapes are ugly (every last one of them that I have ever seen). I think their contouring is ugly. I think their headstocks are ugly. I think their inlays are ugly. I think their control layout is ugly (not to mention a bad way to lay out controls, but that's beside the point here). They're just ugly, sleazy, and usually gaudy looking guitars to me. I don't deny their quality of construction; it's very good. But I also won't kid myself or anyone else by thinking that looks don't matter in a guitar. They matter a lot to me. And not one thing about those guitars looks even slightly good to me in any way, shape, or form. And that doesn't even get into the fact that I don't even particularly like the way they play.
