PRS are gorgeous if you can restrain yourself from writing it off as a Stratopaulster with decorative bird inlays. I'm unable to do so.

Re: You Have To Buy A New Gibson or PRS - Which Do You Choose?

I own four Gibson guitars and zero PRS guitars. If I had to buy another, it would probably be another Gibson. I don't have a 335 or explorer yet. PRS makes beautiful guitars, I've just never played one that I felt like I had to own.

Re: You Have To Buy A New Gibson or PRS - Which Do You Choose?

I think it's one thing to be a Chinese knock-off maker that replicates American premium guitars, but for one American premium maker to borrow so heavily from another just seems wrong. At least with Jackson or Charvel, you could say they make they Super Strat that Fender is unwilling to make. G&L and Heritage can claim some degree of ownership over the designs they "copy". Suhr and PRS don't really have anything like that going for them. They just seem to sell premium copies.

Never thought of it that way. Completely agree.

PRS Custom 24 in Leprechaun Tooth green still looks sexy though :headbang:

Re: You Have To Buy A New Gibson or PRS - Which Do You Choose?

Ive owned 2 PRS's in my time, a custom 24 and a Mccarty I spent 8 years with that C24 trying to convince myself that I loved it, and every time I would pick either of them up it was the same thing. I would grab it and think "WOW what an incredible made guitar its impeccable" but then I would start to play and I'm just not that inspired its like all show and no go. The best analogy I can come up with is that its like the hot chick in school who was an airhead. As cool as she is to show your friends and they ooh and ahh, you get tired pretty quick of having nothing to talk about and repeatedly telling her the motion is up and down not twisting like a bottle cap.

Re: You Have To Buy A New Gibson or PRS - Which Do You Choose?

As much as I like PRS guitars... Daddy needs a CS Les Paul Jr.

Re: You Have To Buy A New Gibson or PRS - Which Do You Choose?

Well, I have 11 Les Pauls and no PRS guitars. I would say that the Historics I own are the best in terms of feel and tone (keeping in mind that my Number One guitar(s) are G&L Legacy bodies.) I have always been a Fender guy--my first electric guitar was a Fender Duo-Sonic, and I've owned a Fender guitar of some sort continuously for the past 49 years, be it Fender, Music Man or G&L. I've also had a love affair with Gibson, too--bought my first one in 1973, and rarely been without one.

Of the PRS guitars that I've tried, I would say that the Mira (not the S2 version) and the McCarty are my favorites, but I have not played a huge number of PRS guitars. I do look at them; they are lovely, and certainly one of the finest crafted instruments available today. I would love to try a Modern Eagle, the 513, and the new Paul's Guitar.

But...when I'm in the store, I tend not to pull them off the wall. It is as though I'm afraid to start liking them...I suspect they could become an even more expensive habit than my Gibsons.

But...

I always feel that there is something "lacking" in a PRS. I sort of feel the same way about my Taylor compared to my Martins. The Taylor is a beautiful guitar, and it is perfectly made, and the playability is excellent. But it doesn't have the warmth, the resonance...the "soul" that my Martins have. They are art...the Taylor is just a tool.

I'll admit, the guitars I lust for are the Gibson Historic LPs--I want a flame-top 1960 reissue SO BAD! Total LUST. And I don't feel that for any of the PRS models--never have. The Warren Haynes sig ES-335 is another guitar I have wet dreams about, but there's nothing in the PRS line that does that for me. The PRS is often seen as an attempt to bridge that gap between a Fender guitar and a Gibson--the best of both worlds--but to me it falls far short of that lofty goal. It's a good guitar in it's own right, but neither Fender or Gibson. It would be nice to have a 513, but it perhaps would be TOO MUCH art, and not enough tool.

Of course, all of the guitars I've written about are more than the $3000 limit of the OP. In the end though, I would choose and pursue that Historic Reissue Les Paul.

Re: You Have To Buy A New Gibson or PRS - Which Do You Choose?

I voted PRS. This was based on the fact that you are in the market for a great playing, great looking guitar that has superb build quality. Sound is subjective and pick ups can always be changed to suit. I have 2 superb LPs and a PRS, all 3 are very different guitars that feel, play and sound great. If I had to chose just one it would be my PRS every day of the week.

Re: You Have To Buy A New Gibson or PRS - Which Do You Choose?

I'd go with PRS at that price point.

Re: You Have To Buy A New Gibson or PRS - Which Do You Choose?

I can now officially confirm that the answer is "Buy a PRS and fit a WLH set to it"...

Re: You Have To Buy A New Gibson or PRS - Which Do You Choose?

Gibson.

PRS guitars are a tad too long in scale length and I believe the fretboard radius might be different. Plus, being a native of Maryland, the fowl inlays remind of my rural surroundings. Not good. lol

Re: You Have To Buy A New Gibson or PRS - Which Do You Choose?

I always really want to like PRS. I respect the man, respect the company. I think they have done nothing but good to the whole musical instrument industry. They created (in my mind) the best budget line of all time, the SE models.

Still, whenever I play a PRS at a shop, after a while my gaze drifts over to SGs and other Gibsons. There I am, playing an immaculate PRS, and I can see the finish flaws on the Gibbies from ten feet away, but when I pick one up, it just feels right.

It's too bad, really.

That right there is why I said PRS. For the money that Gibson is asking for their guitars these days, their quality should be up there with PRS, but it's not. Don't get me wrong, I like Gibsons, heck, I love some of them, but for the money they can keep 'em.

Re: You Have To Buy A New Gibson or PRS - Which Do You Choose?

I would be more inclined to take that three grand and apply it toward a nice late 60's early 70's LP.

Re: You Have To Buy A New Gibson or PRS - Which Do You Choose?

I have two CS Les Pauls that I love, but my PRS guitars feel so much better. PRS

Re: You Have To Buy A New Gibson or PRS - Which Do You Choose?

Of the two, Gibson, definitely. I've never really gotten on with any of the PRS' I've played. I'd take Hamer over both though.

Re: You Have To Buy A New Gibson or PRS - Which Do You Choose?

Hey, I'm a Gibson guy- I have 4.
But, after seeing the hideous 125th anniversary banner on the 2014 models,
and, after seeing all the 'new features' on the 2015 models. I don't think I'll be buying any more new Gibsons.
G tune, Min E tune, no more nibs, a metal adjustable zero fret nut. thinner bodies. Horrible clown like Les Paul sig, and a hologram on the back?
NO THANKS!

Re: You Have To Buy A New Gibson or PRS - Which Do You Choose?

For $3K, you're not in the ballpark for the new Gibson Les Paul Standard prices... SG/Firebirde/Flying V perhaps with some change to spare.

PRS's are nice, but again, still not in the price range. S2 Series perhaps. But their fit/finish/setup is much better than Gibson.

For less than $3K, you can custom order a Heritage H150 or a H157 (Les Paul Standard or Les Paul Custom). I had a PRS S2 Starla, but its Wide/Fat neck profile was nearly as thin and narrow as a Gibson 60's profile. Neither company does much in the way of offering a beefy enough neck without going custom shop. So Heritage will have to be my clear cut winner....

Re: You Have To Buy A New Gibson or PRS - Which Do You Choose?

Actually, you can get a Custom 24 for three grand IIRC.

Re: You Have To Buy A New Gibson or PRS - Which Do You Choose?

For the moment. Once the 2015 price hike kicks in, I'd never buy a new Gibson.
