Your #1

How long have you had your #1 amp?

How long has it been your #1 amp and why?

I got my #1 in Spring of 1993 and it's stayed my #1 since that time. It's a 1978 50w MV Marshall (with 6550s), and it does everything that I want it to do.

Re: Your #1

My #1 took a #2 last summer....LOL. 1990 Marshall JCM900 MkIII 2100. I bought it in 1995 and it has always given me my tone. It's a simple amp with great tone which is what I like in an amp.

EDIT: I guess I should say that my current number 1 now is a Vox AD50VT. Sometime soon, in the near future, I'd like to add in a Mission Aurora.

Re: Your #1

Well, right now my 18 Watter clone is my only amp, so it gets to be #1 by default. But it still will be when there's a #2.

I finished it about 2 1/2 years ago. Since it was my first DIY, I took an educated guess at what would work for me. I knew I wanted a smaller amp, but something Marshally. I liked what Robbie McIntosh did with a 20-watter on the Pretenders' Learning to Crawl album. I did a lot of research on the web about 18 Watters, but figured that since I liked slightly tighter amps (JMP's, JCM800's) back when I was playing out, that a solid state rectifier would get me what I wanted tone-wise.

I lucked out, got it right, and my first DIY turned out to be just about the perfect amp for me.

That said, I'm extremely jealous of GB's JMP 2204 and matching cab. I loved the JMP 2203 I had years ago, and worship several guys (Andy Summers, James Honeyman Scott, Robbie McIntosh) who played JMP's back in day.

Re: Your #1

My early-model Splawn Pro Mod and matching 4x12.

It's the original design with two inputs, no "gear" switching, a shared EQ, and the Mercury Magnetics trannies... I've had it for several years now and it's never failed me. I've not once thought of selling it, and I went through almost a half-dozen different tube amps before settling on it a few years ago. It's about due for a re-tube and bias these days, though.

Re: Your #1

#1 Is my 79' Princeton Reverb I got in the Fall of 95' for $229.:nana: At the time I was Gigging with a 135w UL Twin. That thing was a unntameable beast.
I was soooooo sick of people telling me to turn down.:chairshot So I though I need a amp I can CRANK! and nobody will tell me to turn it down. I've since completely recapped it and returned back to AA1164 BF Specs. I put a weber Cali series speaker in, And Yes... I replaced the hokey looking SF panel w/t a BLack face panel. (Not trying to fool anyone...Just looks better.:14: My HRD is my main gigger now, And I love my 2204 homebrew. But Ole' prinee is still #1.

Re: Your #1

My main is definitely my Dr. Z Maz 18! I can crank that thing! I love that amp but I do really love taking my super out and cranking it. I'm gonna get my super reverb blackfaced (cosmetically and electronically) and who knows, it may take the #1 spot back, but I don't foresee it! :)

Re: Your #1

a early 5150 half stack is my fav.... bought it direct from Peavey, paid only $600 for the head and cab.... the cab was beat to snot as it was an artist loaner, so it was toured a faie bit... It had no casters and the bottom of the cab has no vinyl on it from being loaded in and out of trucks.... the head was in new shape almost... was a damaged but repaired item i believe...

anyways the 5150 is my all time favourite amp i have bought so far.... i may use many others as the pure volume of the 5150 is too insane for most things... but the 5150 is what i like love and want to hear

Re: Your #1

My #1 has been my Bogner EL-34 Shiva w/ Reverb. I've had it for the past 2 years and it still makes me happy. Why? It just works. The cleans are full and sparkly and the overdrive is fat with a unique crunch. It takes pedals well also, so I add a pedal or two for taste (really happy with my Lovekraft Mojo Drive for lead work right now).

Been my #1 for a while now.....takes pedals extremely well & provides a big base for any tone you might be looking for :D

Re: Your #1

Right now, my number 1 is a Victoria Double Deluxe.

I bought it for one of my bands, and ended up using it for both of them. It's a killer amp.

Re: Your #1

I just bought the best amp I have ever played through. A Komet 60! I absoultely love the tone of this amp. It makes every guitar sound excellent! It is the most touch responsive amp I have ever used!

Prior to the Komet my main amp was a Bogner Shiva w Reverb, also a great amp (I still have it and plan on keeping it).

Prior to the Bogner I was using a '68 Super Reverb A/B'd with a Marshall 900. A great combination of tones with those two amps.

Re: Your #1

1972 Fender Twin Reverb. First tube amp I've owned, but I love 'em. I prefer the clean tube amp thing. Anyways, 2 x Celestion Classic Leads.

My Engl E360 Sovereign 100 Vinatge 1x12 combo.
Just so tonefull on all it's four channels and also a crushing metal amp.

Re: Your #1

budda superdrive 80 w/ cab. bought new last summer and i dont see myself getting rid of it anytime soon. amazing tone, simple to use and loudest thing ever made

Re: Your #1

I've had my JMP 2204 since November Last year, Picked up the 1960ax cab in January. Couldn't be happier with it. It needs a re-tube now, that will be in the next couple of weeks I should think. I need a new drive pedal to push it with, becuase i'm not completely happy with the really dirty tones from it, with a rat and a SD-1, i'm probably going to pick up a Fulltone Fulldrive.
