Your all time favorite 2 humbucker combo

T-Deco bridge, Pearly Gates neck

Makes every Gibson sound I’ve ever needed to make with the right level of heat, from Lester Paul jazz, to Cream sizzle, to Free rock and roll, to James Gang grooves, to Zeppelin heavy blues, to AC/DC hard rock, to Ozzy/80’s metal, to recent-era clean U2-ish stuff - everything I played I really enjoyed playing with that set. Stayed in for more than a year. Keeper set. Only took it out because I just wanted some experience with other pickups. For the moment currently have a Jazz set in, which is actually similar.

What’s the difference between the custom shops and the regulars?

I find this type of question a little disconcerting in its ambiguity. The answers have already been all over the place. You'd expect that, because everyone has a different style they play and different pups that suit their styles best.

It's like asking..."what's your favorite car"?

(for doing errands around town?)
(for driving on the highway?)
(for moving furniture?)
(for off-road driving in the mountains?)
(for driving in the sand dunes?)
(for drag racing?)
(for Grand Prix?)

But, if you perhaps tried to qualify the question by asking to first identify the type of music we play and which pups we have found that do that best for us, it would be better to help us understand the answers that have been given.

Or if you are asking which pup set do we feel is the most versatile, (since we "could just pick one combo"), then that makes more sense too. And if this were the case, then I would choose a regular P-Rail with Triple shot in the neck, and a regular P-Rail with A8 magnet and Triple Shot in the bridge. That would give me options for clean split or parallel tones, or heavier, full, powerful, series humbucker tones in the bridge.

That's a good point. For the combos I mentioned, I play almost exclusively "clean", and at home studio volume. Which is to say, fairly low as guitar players go. I (almost) never bother the neighbors.

I play pretty quiet too. Even onstage volume isn't much more than at home (if I use an amp at all).

I always play through an amp. I tend to set my amp for a clean tone and use a Klon to get some dirt or a Dover Drive to get those Eric Johnson style violin tones. The Klon into the Dover Drive gets a more searing overdrive and I like that too sometimes.

And again, my favorite set of humbuckers are Duncan Antiquitys with the stock roughcast Alnico 2 magnets.

I've done some magnet swapping in some of my Antiquity sets and have Antiquitys with an A3 neck and A2 bridge, and A2 neck and A4 bridge. too.

I have removed the covers from all of my Antiquitys. I've always liked that sound better for rock and British blues.

tough call, even though I don't have anything with this combo anymore, Demon/Jazz is a personal favorite. I also really like my modded 500T(A8)/496R(A4) set

Hmmm. I thought the custom shop won’t do double cream. Did you ask for double cream with covers over them, and then wink aggressively?

No, I ordered them from a vendor, JMI Music. You'd have to ask them what they did to get them that way.

They look great though, covers on or off:

That's my favorite look. Double Creams and a Les Paul look so right.

Love the CS PG's too. Used them for awhile and never stopped liking them.

I don't play Les Pauls anymore, but I've owned quite a few.

These days I prefer a thinner, lighter body.

Here's one of my my PRS Singlecuts. Seth Lovers w/A4 magnets.

From those I've tried, APH-2n and SH-5b. Covers a lot of ground for the types of music I play.

I mainly play rock, 80's metal, some blues and stuff like that. Almost always distorted or overdriven.

Bare Knuckle Abraxas set for me. The bridge has the vintage sound going but with a bit more guts. The neck is clear and bright - I hate neck pups that veer towards 'woman tone'.
