Re: Your Fave Guitar + Amp combo ... No effects

Love that rig...you and I have a lot in common...different but for sure related!

My '96 Les Paul Standard and '80 Marshall JMP 2104

Sorry, forgot the pic :D

I gigged with this amp and guitar last night and they sounded perfect. I've been in the habit of using my DSL 50 and 1936 cab for gigs lately. I love the DSL in classic gain crunch mode, but there is something special in the response of this JMP that the DSL just can't match. It cleans up so well with the guitar volume, but sounds fat and full when you turn it up and hit the strings harder. The '96 LP has been my #1 since I bought it. Sometimes wish it had a cooler finish (like my '91 Classic :naughty:) but this guitar feels and sounds so good!

very nice! what year is the amp ? Les Paul and Marshall, can't go wrong ! I personally don't use either because I feel like its been done so much and I should try and be different so to speak but If I had the money I would be investing in a nice vintage JTM45...

It's a 1980. I had one I bought new in 1980 then sold in the late 80s when I thought I needed two channels and reverb :smack:

Regretted that sale for years and eventually picked this one up on eBay about six years ago.

Les Paul and Marshall is what I grew up loving in the 70s so it's really my go-to sound!

Talking vintage JTM45 - I bought one for £40 in 1977 - an original from the 60s. At that time everyone wanted the master volume Marshalls and you could pick up older NMV models really cheap. There was no such thing as "vintage" then - they were just "old"! I sold that JTM45 in 1980 for about £100 and thought I did well. One of my greatest ever gear sale regrets :crying:

Yeah we all have our gear regrets.... very jealous though I have only dreamt about owning a JTM45... I never see them in any shops either

Whenever I see Smokin Joe Kubek play he reminds me that a strat, tuned low, heavy strings, and played through a Blackface Twin is a tough combo to beat. But I'm guessing his amp is modded. To me that's the ultimate tone. He gets plenty of variety out of that combination too.

The next closest thing would from guys who service and repair the vintage ones and know exactly how to build them and have all the parts and skills.

(He used to repair and sell tons of originals http://plexipalace.com/wp/)

Mojave has also got one left with Radio Spares transformers and NOS tubes in it

(FWIW - I have a Wallace with NOS tubes installed. Very good indeed.)

some Aria Pro II Jackson copy into a Sunn head whose model I never took note of.

almost 25 years ago, and I still have never played anything that sounded that good. I have no idea why it sounded that good but damn it did.

Re: Your Fave Guitar + Amp combo ... No effects

Currently my favorite amp/guitar. Early 90's Mesa Boogie DC-5b and and early model import Hamer MIK. The guitars tend to change with my mood but this is the usual go to guitar (providing I'm not reinstalling pickups in my older Ibanez Artists). The amp is always the constant.

Re: Your Fave Guitar + Amp combo ... No effects

80s superstrats into a soldano is where I'm at home. I find ESPs into 5150s, PRSs into Boogies to work synergistically. Even though I don't care for them, to be honest.

Favorite? What day is it?

Fender Strat/Surfers and ES-335/Seth Lovers into blackface Fender Pro Reverb.

Gibson LP/Brobucker/PGn or SG/Burstbuckers into Bogner XTC halfstack.

Godin LG/P-90's or telecaster into Matchless Chieftain 212.

Fender Am. Std/Duncan C/59 into Marshall Jubilee 2550 stack.

Any of my Dearmond guitars into Gibson Goldtone GA-30RVS
