Your favorite 4x12 CAB and WHY?

I am torn between getting a Marshall 4x12 1960B with V30s or a Mesa Recto cab with v30s

then with the Mesa do you go oversized?

I have a Mojave with G12H30s but I want a more modern sound like the V30s. Then again, the Greenbacks are always sweet but mush out when loud?

So what's the most versatile 4x12 cab out there that goes from clean to metal AND in between? What is tonal bliss?

Re: Your favorite 4x12 CAB and WHY?

I haven't had a ton of experience with different 4X12s and different configurations. But I do know what I like, and what I've heard.

To me, Mesa cabs seem to be part of the "Mesa Sound". Mesas with other cabinets don't normally sound their best without their proper cabinets and speakers. That said I feel that the Mesa cab allow you to really hear how the head sounds with minimal coloration. Don't they use Black Shadows in most of their cabs? I was once told that is an EV speaker which would really explain a lot.

Marshall cabinets kind of have their own vibe, and tone. Using a Marshall cabinet with another type of amp kind gives you a spice of Marshall flavor.
My Marshall 4X12 has G12Hs (original from 82). I love the lows and low mids as well as the rounded high end. It kind of reminds me of an A2P in a speaker.

The only amp/cab combo I've ever messed with that had V30s was a Crate Blue Voodoo. It had a very nice and cutting tone. It seemed like the speakers really helped get through the mix.

Well, in my opinion, 90% of the cabs you can buy are overpriced crap.

If you want a good cab, buy yourself some speakers of choice and screw together a plywood cab. It'll cost less, give you the exact sound you want, and chances are, it's gonna be much better quality.

Just my 2c. :)

Bogner makes the best I've ever heard. BIG sound, lots of depth, projection and sweet woody, resonant tone.

Re: Your favorite 4x12 CAB and WHY?

I played a Diezel the other day which was 300w, not sure what speaker (since Diezel says its either their own speaker or V30s and v30s would be 280w MAX)

Bogner Cabs ARE killer

Hmmm me build a CAB? hahahahahah you want to see a crooked piece of child's work? hahahahah yeah I will get laughed off stage. I am laughing myself off now as I speak.

Hands down, as long as you don't REALLY know what you are doing, a well built cab like a Marshall 1960 or one of the Framus ones will be so much better.

Re: Your favorite 4x12 CAB and WHY?

There are a stack (:nervous: ) of cabs out there that are a good - Bogner, Engl, Splawn and Marshall and Mesa. You need to try them out to see which is best for you.

Re: Your favorite 4x12 CAB and WHY?

Well, have you ever thougth of what a brand cab costs?

If you spent the same money on parts, and bulit a cab yourself, you'd almost be able to gold plate it ;)

Anyway, i've bulit some cabs myself, that sounds and looks great. Building a cab is no problem, you just need an electric drill, screws, one of those "steichensaws" (err.... those hand hold mf'ers with the blade coming out underneath), and some tolex.

No problem really.

I think it would take one hell of a craftsman to build a cabinet of equal, none the less, greater, quality than say Bogner or Mesa. Unrealistic for most Joes.

CAN I SAY AGAIN not only would me building a cab be an embarassment to all carpentry going back to Jesus and Joseph -

AS WELL

I might lose a finger

I LIKE MY FINGERS, DAMMIT!

Luke

Im very jealous!

The ENGL cabs have to be some of the best ive seen, they are built with a grill over the speakers you couldnt kick through if you tried and they are absolute tanks! Sounds great too, and they cost less than the mesa cabs!

Re: Your favorite 4x12 CAB and WHY?

Best semi-available cab out there now may be the Marshall HW cab with the Heritage G12H30's. Bad news is even heavily discounted, the top cab is around $1300 at GC. The Hendrix TV with the same speakers will be even more, assuming that you will eventually be able to buy it seperately.

And which technics do you apply to make a good cab? Tell me...

Glue and screws. The same as all other cabs ;).

On my spruce 1x12", i did dovetail joints, just to make it look good (i used a clear coat to finish it).

Re: Your favorite 4x12 CAB and WHY?

I like Marshall cabs just because they were the first and to me will always look the coolest. I've always liked the looks of the angled top cab better than the looks of the big bottem cab...but the bottem cab sounds better because it's bigger inside.

As for speakers, same as always: Vintage 30's or G12H30's....although the G12m25 sounds great in a sealed 4 x 12 cab.

To my ears, the G12M25 Greenback sounds best in a 4 x 12 bottem...not crazy about it in any other configuration, especially in open back cabs where it lacks bass.

Can't beat Bogner or Splawn with V30's, IMO.
