Your favorite amp

Got away from running a rack rig. I ran it with several different processors and used an ART X 15 midi controller. It was big and heavy, plus a pain to set up and with 9 12AX7's in the pre and the 6L6's plus a couple more 12AX7s in the Power Amp to maintain. Still was a good sounding rig.

How were you able to run a rack full of stuff with an X-15? All on 1 midi channel? I hated that pedal when I owned it.

My primary amp is still, and will probably always will be, me trusty old Marshall 2204 with a Mesa V-Twin in front of it. God, the things that amp and I have been through, including it almost getting totaled like 6 months after I got it by falling out the back ouf our van in Geneva, which is why it´s still in a knockoff headcase from a czech copy almost 30 years later.

But over the years a few other options have come out of my endeavors, like the Subache /S.A.D. rack based off aPeavey Rockmaster, TC G-Major w/ A.R.T. X-15 untrafoot controller, which is great when I either need more than 1 or 2 effects or the Mrshall just isn't quite aggressive enough. And a 400 W solid state "Fame" head (house brand from Musictrore Germany.... apparently these were made by Laboga) that can and will give any Recto a good run for its money but only cost me 150 bucks with cab in close to new condition on ebay, because nobody knew what it was and I wanted to have a backup for when the Marshall is out for retubing or develops some other problem and gets put out of commission.

I can´t speak for Ascension´s case, but for me the G-Major is actually the brains of the setup and does the amp switching, and the X-15 is "only" there for switching presets and the expression pedals. All the other stuff like the EMP-100 are set and forget and sit in a channel specific effects loop (one of the best features of the rockmaster, separate, dedicated FX loops for every channel), same with the EQ, left is clean, right is lead, crunch doesn´t get one...... But yeah, if I were to buy a new floorboard or need to chain numerous MIDI controlled devices, it probably wouldn´t be anoither X-15 ;)

I think they had a "Fame" head that was a Mr Hector too that cost.peanuts.

...looked high and low for one online back in the day, but no luck.

But even program changes would have to be on the same midi channel.

Most of the time ran it with a Midi Verb and had Expression pedal control of several parameters. May have been that I ran a pretty simple set up. All I used the X15 for with the Carvin was as a channel switch and then controlled the Ultra Verb. Later ran it with a Rocktron Voo Doo Vale or a Chameleon alone. The Carvin has minimal midi control In only assignable channel switching. I could see real issues if I were running multiple processors, but I wasn't.

Here is the PRS rig. Killer expressive modern high gain on the drive channel and a great warm clean with a lot of headroom that is very pedal friendly. Own now and have owned a lot of nice amps, but this one has become my all-time favorite. This is NOT the new series 2 import version of the Archon.
The little Subway Rocket is my grab and go small gig rig. Best small grab and go combo I have ever owned.

I've tried many different amps over the decades and I like Marshall EL34 plexis as my favorite. 100W has great headroom although I loved my sold 2204 and still have and love my 1987.

I'd like to try a mesa stiletto, Bogner Helios 100 and hiwatt dr103...all of which are EL34 powered.

the peavey classic is an excellent amp too but the transparency and clarity of marshall is a force for me.

I am not interested in fender amps at all anymore having owned a few.

for high gain or crunch practicing I love my marshall 2203x and 2555x (master volume).

but marshall 1959 is my top choice. the 1987 shimmering jingle jangle channel 1 is second. apparently the original 1987 channel 1 circuit had even more treble emphasis.

the big bottles (5881 and 6L6) just sound off to me. not enough mid focused saturation. too much bassy headroom and just clumsy sounding. I had the first gen peavey 5150 and my 2204 just kicked it's ass all day. other fender 6L6s I had turned chords to mush whereas every chorded note rang clear in my Marshall's no matter what volume.

good pickups also helps! ;-)

Have you tried a Hiwatt Custom 100? I love vintage.Marshalls, but I can say that my DR103 and DR504 cured my JMP 1987 gas permanently and then some. I agree with you on most 6L6 Fenders, but love me a vintage NMV Ampeg VT22 or V4.

Back in the 80's it was a 50w Marshall half stack. I can't remember what the model number is. It might have been a 2203 or 2204. I used to get a lot of compliments on it. Now, it's my Peavey 5150 212 combo.I use it straight or as a pedal platform. Either way, it sounds good.

I haven't tried a hiwatt yet. I heard they're known for high headroom shimmering clean sounds.

having just played my 2203x for a couple of hours I honestly don't think I need any more amps. Marshall's just provide everything I like.

my gas level is quite low now. maybe it has to do with the $9000 AC unit I just bought.:smash:

They're definitely quite beautiful clean, but they're more than capable of awesome crunch tones with the inputs bridged and cranked with the master up near half or beyond.

I've had my Boogie MkV for over 10 years, and I love its versatility, and I picked up a Splawn Super Sport a few months ago that sounds killer. But my #1 has to be my FJA modded 2 channel Rev G Triple Rec

For me, I do not think it is a favorite amp but a favorite combo. I run my JCM 2000 through Eminace Wheelhouse speakers and the VOX AC30 with Tone Speak Birminghams. I run the amps in parallel with the lows-mids going through the Marshall and mids-highs going through the VOX. It just works for me.
