Really? Not even the Bluesbreakers or Derek (pure Strat heaven IMHO)?

Re: Your favorite Clapton tone?

Yeah..... I agree he never had BAD tone...... All eras of his sound are great, just in different ways.

1. When I describe the ultimate HB tone, I use either the BB tone or "croosroads" Live as a refernce. When I describe the Strat Tone. Its always the Layla Album

Re: Your favorite Clapton tone?

I still think some of Clapton's best playing was for Roger Waters on Pros & Cons Of Hitch Hiking.

Re: Your favorite Clapton tone?

He has good tone, and i like strat tone, but i was never blown away. I like my own tone better.

Re: Your favorite Clapton tone?

Bluesbreakers. Gibson 1960 Les Paul thru a Marshall 45W combo. What more could you ask for.

Re: Your favorite Clapton tone?

Clapton's tone using the SG was his best overall. Especially the live stuff from the week in March of '68 when they were going back and forth between the Fillmore and the Winterland in San Fran (Live side of Wheels of Fire; Live Cream I & II). The same tone can be heard on the "Fresh Live Cream" DVD, when they show them playing in a Paris club.

Re: Your favorite Clapton tone?

Bluesbreakers #1 for sure and I love the Strat tone on the Layla Album. I don't care as much for his tone nowadays very compressed.

Re: Your favorite Clapton tone?

Clapton's tone was more hard edged back in the bluesbreakers and cream days. I like it better than the tone he has now.

Tough Call. His B.B. tone set the standard for Rock guitar tone. I'm still
amazed by the sound he got . His cream era tone was great,But I think
that era was maybe his best playing. Then his lalya tone...A total
departer from his previous sounds and he pulled it off. I guess i gotta
with Layla. I'm a sucker for the Fender sound done well.

Re: Your favorite Clapton tone?

I came close to saying Creem as it was such an amazing tone..... but i think some of the stuff i heard him do in the 90's was amazing! Towards the end of the 90's i saw him on tv doing a concert and he had a few Bassman looking amps with him... I heard they were custom shop amps made with new and vintage fender parts..... When he did Badge and had some sort of phaser type effect on it sounded God Like!
