Your favorite guitar cable?

Re: Your favorite guitar cable?

spectraflex fatso flex braided cables.

They won some award in GP for being the most natural sounding cable (least comp) under $100. They are only $20-$30 a peice.

Planet Waves makes good stuff too but it's a little more money.

Re: Your favorite guitar cable?

For pedalboards, I really like the Bill Lawrence "Wilde" stuff. In the past few years that I've used them, I think I had one or two eventually go bad and have to be re-terminated (they have the screw down connections). The sound is clear with a more of an upper mid emphasis. I'm not sure I'd want an entire rig with them, but I think they mix well.

For longer cables, I've been using the Lava Cable "ELC Tweed" cables for some time. The ELCs are pretty clear sounding cables, with more definition in the lows than other cables I've used and the high end frequencies are still present, but not as pronounced as with other cables. I'd say it's a pretty balanced cable with a full frequency response. Mark (Lava Man) also makes the ELC in a pedalboard format, but for my taste I felt the high frequencies got rolled off a bit too much collectively (which is why I like mixing them with the Bill Lawrence stuff). Mark is a standup guy with GREAT customer service (he's made some custom cables for me before and they turned out excellent) and a really solid product. He also offers a wide variety of different sounding cable and could steer you in the right direction if you had any questions about what to get.

Planet Waves are good cables if you're all about the midrange. They don't have the lowend of the ELCs and because of their frequency response, they come off as more aggressive sounding cables. The clarity in the midrange and snarl make it great if you want to cut in the mix in a rock band, but the highs aren't as defined as other cables and if you want a thumping lowend you'll be disappointed. This one is somewhat of an exciting cable (atleast for me, being a British fan), but keep in mind that you can't easily undo the coloring that it imparts.

The Monster Cable "Rock" cable has more of a lower mid emphasis with some veiled highs. The one I have I pretty much reserve for my bass guitar in the studio. Not bad, but completely overrated.

I've had the Canare GS-6 before, but felt it was the dullest sounding out of the above cables. It's well made cable and an industry standard, but it's dark and pretty bland compared to the above.

As far as speaker cable goes, my favorite is by a small company called Mulder Audio. I can't afford their guitar and pedalboard cables, but the speaker cables are phenomenal and one of the best purchases I've ever made. The clarity and punch you get from them (coming from the typical speaker cable brands) is immediately noticeable.

I've recently started using Evidence Lyric HG, and the results are exceptional. Very confronting at first, because they are so punchy and clear, and they will show up any weak point in your signal chain. But now that I'm used to them, I don't think there's any turning back. So far I am only using them from guitar to pedal board and from board to amp, but next I will be looking at outfitting the entire pedal board with something from the Evidence range. They're not cheap, but then excellent things rarely are.

Cheers............................................ wahwah

Re: Your favorite guitar cable?

I like Spectraflex and Mogami. Been using Spectraflex for the last 15 years or so. On my board I just use the inexpensive connector cables at GC by the counter. I only need a couple anyway so I don't see a need to spend a lot there.

Re: Your favorite guitar cable?

I've been using George L's stuff for a long time now and see no reason at all to switch.

Me too. Bought a couple of spools of George L cable and George L connectors
what? Ten years ago? Still using the cables I made back then. Once in a while I'll notice a little static or something and I'll just tighten up the connectors a little bit and they work perfectly again. I like the way my guitar sounds with George L's too.

Re: Your favorite guitar cable?

Whirlwind straight cables usually 18'.

George L's sound fine but they suck on stage.

Re: Your favorite guitar cable?

Most of my cables are monster cable and a few others that I can't remember. Since I went wireless I haven't had to buy any new ones.

Re: Your favorite guitar cable?

Mogami in the Pro audio section Guitar Center. :approve:

Re: Your favorite guitar cable?

Lava! :)

Lava Clear Connects to be exact. I've used Planet Waves, Klotz La Grange and Dimarzios. They are good as well.

Re: Your favorite guitar cable?

My best-sounding guitar cable is a frikkin' MIT Exp 2 audio cable with 1/4" Neutrik connectors soldered on the ends. It's only 10 feet long; it's heavy, stiff, and microphonic, but it sounds amazing.

I also like my Fender cables. I've got one of the Koil ones that's a lot of fun, and I've got the Premium Platinum one that I use for jamming with the guys. It has some solid conductors and hence is somewhat stiff, but does sound really good for a 20ft. cable.

Re: Your favorite guitar cable?

Planet Waves Custom Pro. They have a low capacitence so my high end stays keen, doesn't EQ my tone (#1 reason for using it), quiet as a still night, high-end connectors (great plus), and a really fair price.

This cable is the thing I think the most highly of in my rig. A cable. Yeah.
