I submit for starters:

Bill Connors on Return to Forever's "Hymn of the 7th Galaxy" (Les Paul Custom through Marshall half-stack w/ phaser and tone booster box of some sort).

Tony Iommi on Black Sabbath Vol 4 (SG Special w/ John Birch rewound P-90 pickups)

Allan Holdsworth on Tony Williams' "Believe It" (SG Custom through Marshall half-stack).

Eric Clapton on Cream's "Disreali Gears" (especially on "Outside Woman Blues" and "We're Going Wrong")

Robert Fripp on King Crimson's "Starless & Bible Black" (especially the title cut, "Great Deceiver" and "Fracture". Les Paul Custom through fuzz pedal, wah and Hiwatt stack).

How about yours--------------

Re: Your Favorite Guitar Tones EVER!

So many to choose from.

But my latest favorite has to be Robin Trower on Bridge of Sighs. Just listen to the opening bars of "Little Bit of Sympathy" and you'll hear what I mean.

Hoo Hooo, good to be here! Some very unique choices there for sure!!! I LOVE Robben Ford's sound too! I think when "Talk To Your Daughter" came out he just started using a Dumble Overdrive Special amp, amazing tone! Alexander Dumble is quite the headcase from what I understand

I also love Carlos Santana's sound in general, especially when he went to Mesa Boogie's (before, he was using the Boogie's ancestor, a hot-rodded Fender Princeton)

EC - Beano album

Sonny Landreth - "When You're Away"

Re: Your Favorite Guitar Tones EVER!

Hello Hello---
Jeff Beck on his first tour with the Jeff Beck Group [Rod Stewart, Ron Wood, Mick Waller]. He was using his beat-to-death Les Paul through 50-watt Marshalls. Never sounded as good on any of his studio cuts!
Brian.

Re: Your Favorite Guitar Tones EVER!

You're so right!! Here's a couple that I forgot.

Van Halen: VH1 - Fair Warning
Boston: Don't Look Back

Re: Your Favorite Guitar Tones EVER!

Johnny Rzeznik (Goo Goo Dolls - Superstar Car Wash/A Boy Named Goo era)
Van Halen (any of the early stuff)
Slash (Guns 'N Roses - Appetite for Destruction, UYI 1&2)
Alice In Chains (mostly everything)
Hoobastank - Self Titled
Steve Vai - Alien Love Secrets
Fuel - Sunburn

To me, great tone is: chimey cleans, a light articulate overdrive (preferably one that's "just breaking up" mmmm ;) , a modern and heavy crunch, and thick, articulate, sustaining leads. If it's articulate and it has crunch, I usually love it.
