A few more that spring to mind....

Paul Kossoff - Free Live :notworthy
D1ck Wagner & Steve Hunter - Rock 'n' Roll Animal

WOW!! Haven't heard those in YEARS!!! The Hunter/Wagner "Sweet Jane/Intro" was one for the ages alright! :headbang:

And that absolutely magical tone Duane Allman got on The Allman Bros @ Fillmore East, unbelievable!! Nothing more than a Les Paul (w/ rewound pickups I understand), a Marshall 50W bass head (no joke!), a 4X12 and a bass cab.

Re: Your Favorite Guitar Tones EVER!

Everything by David Gilmour, Eric Clapton, SRV, Jimi Hendrix, Robert Cray, Albert King.

...

Oh and Owl ... those JB Magnums that he had sound much better than his SG's with the Gibsons don't you think ... you can really hear it on the Last Supper DVD ... I wonder if it's the fact that I think they're not as high output as the full sized Gibby pups

Couldn't agree with you more there!! I also LOVED his tone on the very early Sab stuff you mentioned above. Just a stock SG Custom or some such thing (lefties in those days were hard to come by).

Re: Your Favorite Guitar Tones EVER!

Jimi on Axis Bold As Love. Very tasty.
Page on Ten Years Gone. Nice
SRV on Lenny - like he's in the room
Johnny Winter - too many to mention
The Edge on In a Little While (I think that's the song name). That intro is some of the best tone ever.
George Harrison - While My Guitar Gently Weeps

Can you tell I don't listen to anything new?

Re: Your Favorite Guitar Tones EVER!

there are simply too many and most of the ones named in this thread certainly qualify ... but i thought i'd throw out something a bit off the beaten path to represent good tone from a guitarist in a supporting role

jamie west oram (sp?) of the 80's synth pop band "the fixx" ... very glassy, liquid chorus chime .. very cool single note riff tone too .. never a flashy solo voice ... 'just right' rhythm tone ... i'd be willing to bet a pint that he played a strat into a roland jc120 ... check out 'saved by zero' or 'one thing leads to another' for definitive examples

cheers,

Good call t4d!! He definitely has that classic chimey Strat tone that I find very pleasing to the ear. As much as I hated the 80's in general, the Fixx were a whole different animal. I was listening to Coast to Coast AM a few nights ago and "Saved By Zero" was some of the featured bumper music. Deeeelicious!

Stevie Ray Vaughan - anything he did.
Billy Gibbons - Tush
Mark Knopfler - Sultans of Swing
Norman Greenbaum - Spirit in the Sky
Eric Clapton - Crossroads

Re: Your Favorite Guitar Tones EVER!

There are many guitar tone gods out there but I would have to say:

Tony Iommi = live(all) my personal best is dirty women, live on technical ecstasy

Jimi Hendrix= live (all) but mostly purple haze live at san diego, ca, 1968

Eric Clapton= sunshine of your love, crossroads

also alot of 60's blues and psychadelic rock because in the 60's the best amps and equipment was made, now there are just reissues with added bits that don't sound anything like they used to except the marshall vintage amps and various pickups thats why I am here for pickups although I can't find the SSL-1L pickups unless they are the SSL vintage ones?

Re: Your Favorite Guitar Tones EVER!

tom morello - all of the first rage album :headbang:
brian may
i love carlos santanas recent tone, though i've heard alot of people bash it

Re: Your Favorite Guitar Tones EVER!

i really love hendrix clean tones like on the wind cries mary, and on little wing. To me it's one of the best recorded strat tones besides SRV.

Re: Your Favorite Guitar Tones EVER!

Nirvana - From the Muddy Banks of the Wishka - Milk It

System of a Down - Toxicity (all of it)

Re: Your Favorite Guitar Tones EVER!

Anybody but Neil Young :32: Who was the guitar player for Jackson Brown back in the 70's? I loved the sound this dude got

Re: Your Favorite Guitar Tones EVER!

This isn't remotely comprehensive, but here's some I've been thinking about lately:

J. Mascis (Mr. Stun Guitar)
Mark Knopfler - Sultans of Swing
Van Halen - Fair Warning
