Your favorite practice amp

Re: Your favorite practice amp

My practice amp is a Randall WH40 "Dimebag signature". I only use the power amp section of it though in combination with a Zoom G7.1ut that goes to the return of the effects loop. This amp is nothing more than a Randall RG40 with camo tolex and a grill in front of the speaker, and the Celestion Rocket 50 in it sure isn't the best speaker, but I can't part with this little amp.

So freaking cool. I am GASing.

Re: Your favorite practice amp

Orange Micro Dark. For lower volume, I use a 1x12 cab with it. With a 2x12, its rehearsal worthy... Mic that and aim the speaker at your head and it could be gig worthy too.

Re: Your favorite practice amp

Cube 30
I've got modelers and such for recording and low voiumes
but when I want to put a new acquisition to the test and move some air
its the Cube I drag out

Re: Your favorite practice amp

I still use the Peavey Vypyr 15 that I bought 10 or so years ago. It still sounds good enough for bedroom playing. But since I got my Line 6 Helix, I usually just use that with headphones. And when Helix Native comes out, my laptop will probably take over for my practice/quiet rig.

I had one of those once
It was so light and fragile feeling
It was if you dropped it
It would float to the floor and disintegrate

I'm not saying that I've abused my Vypyr, but it's rode around in the bunk of my truck for many many miles, has fallen off the bed, I've dropped it ect. It has held up.

Re: Your favorite practice amp

My favorite practice amp is a Marshal JCM900 into a 1960AV, assuming I'm practicing with a band.

If I'm just practicing by myself at home, I'll use any of the following:

Orange AD50 into Randall RG-80 Cab (has a master volume and can be turned low)
SansAmp PSA-1 into VOX AC30
Emery SuperBaby into Randall RG-80 Cab
Fender Champion 600
Pedal board straight into an old Boss MA-15A

...basically making do with whatever I have around. Never bought an amp specifically for bedroom practice.

Re: Your favorite practice amp

I use a Peavey Vypyr 15, too. It sits in my teaching studio. It is a little bright on all settings, so I have to use it with a Bad Monkey OD pedal which has a 'mixer' output. i use that, as it shaves off the very highs. But for lots of practice at home, I use a nylon string Yamaha with a smaller neck and shallower body (for steel string players) and I play it with a pick.

Peavey Revalver IV through a Focusrite Scarlett 2i4 running on my desktop computer and 20 year old hifi tower speakers. Yeah yeah, I know, modeling is the antichrist etc etc. It works for me.

I love modelers and my Scarlett 2i2. Come to think of it, I love 20-year-old towers. However, my current fav is my H&K Edition Blue 60R. The cool thing about SS, is you can turn it down without losing much. (Fidelity, I mean.)

Re: Your favorite practice amp

for a small portable amp I used to use a fender blues jr but lately I use a Fender champ x2. Its tube, has built in FX, has easily enough cleans and distortion, is 2 channels, and sounds good at low volume. Most Fender Tube amps above volume setting 3 will sound better then the Fender champ above 3 but from volume settings between 1 to 3.5 the Fender Champ sounds pretty good for a cheap tube amp. Its pretty light weight too so I like to play it watching a guitar instruction video or just watching Tv. Once over 3 though a Blues Jr will start to pull away from this amp sound wise as a Blues Jr really starts to open up at about the volume 3 mark but at that point it may be too loud for other people in the house late at night or in another close room.
