Zephyr Silver

Re: Zephyr Silver

Exactly. A lot of self-styled savvy consumers going through this exercise, tend to forget about overhead. Because, really, you didn't have electricity to your facility that month just to build their pickup, so it's not fair to include any portion of the electric bill in the overhead costs associated with it. Because you would have had electricity anyway, even it you weren't building their pickup. You should just absorb that as a cost of doing business. Make customers who bought Quarter-Pounders for Tele pay for it, or something.

details, details...

Re: Zephyr Silver

I'd rather have a shopping spree of regular Duncans I haven't tried yet.
When I start to get bored with them, I'll be ready to try the Zephyrs.

Re: Zephyr Silver

I guess I'm having trouble understanding the economic theory that some use in determining whether a product is worth the price to them. Here's what I'm gathering:

If you don't play professionally, it doesn't pay to invest in anything expensive, because you're not looking to make money back from it. But in this case you are by definition not concerned with return on investment, because you don't play professionally. You buy things because you enjoy owning and using them on your own terms. It's called a hobby. It's a situation that basically frees you from worrying about getting ROI out of a purchase, at least in economic terms.

I'm not really talking about economic returns on the investment, so much as I'm thinking about the sonic "returns". In live performance, even with the best gear and a sound man who isn't a hungover moron, you won't REALLY hear that kind of difference.... so what's the point? In a studio environment, you would be able to decipher the nuances and increased clarity and dynamics, etc. The "feel" aspect could "benefit" anybody but that is far afield of the end results of music performance.... at least for me. I don't really play for myself. I play to entertain others and hopefully make some money in the process. Aside from that, any pro would make back $1000 in short order, but would the Zephyrs really be used to their potential anywhere else but the studio? Who knows.

I would love to try them, but that's probably not going to happen anytime soon.

Re: Zephyr Silver

I wonder what a Zephyr P90 would cost? :scratchch

I wonder whether it would have the sound and feel that a good P90 ought to?

Never forget that the majority of our favourite guitar tones were arrived at by accident or chance. Amplifier overdrive was not considered desirable when the P90 first appeared. The Stratocaster was intended to use Medium gauge strings and its legendary "in between" pickup combinations only exist because of Leo's choice of selector switch.

This is not to dispute that a Mega Deluxe P90 might sound wonderful. Personally, I like my P90s just the way they are.

Re: Zephyr Silver

I want Zephyr Seths for an LP.

I'm daydreaming about a forum Zephyr Brobucker

The Zephyr treatment includes the cryo, glass filled bobbins and bi-metallic pole pieces in addition to the silver wire. However, through the Custom Shop, you can order any permutation of any pickup. So right now, you can order the pickups you're describing above.; a silver-wire Seth or Brobucker, for instance.

Yeah, make my custom shop Zephyr Seth Lover 2-conductor too . . . y'know . . . for the sake of being vintage correct. :P

Groovy! The SECOND I'm no longer broke, I'm ordering a Custom/'59 set. Looks like that could be quite a long time, though. :(

Re: Zephyr Silver

so my friend and i (and our poor significant others) stopped by the factory on a little road trip and evan and frank were cool enough to let us try out some guitars with zephyrs. you can read all about how the guitars were made which is very cool.

i tried the buckers first and was handed two guitars, one with zephyrs and the other with similar pups but copper wire. i wasnt told which was which, just to check em out and see what i thought. not sure which one i tried first but believe me when i say that it wasnt hard to pick which one was the zephyr loaded axe. the clarity and string to string definition was incredible. no more flubby open low e string. the note had shape, color, texture and punch like ive never heard from a neck humbucker. very tight and focused while still being immensely musical. it felt like a great pup through the amp, some how it was more aggressive when pushed hard but more refined than the copper version. the tone was wider but less cluttered or congested. if you suck, then these are not the pups for you cause they will show you how bad you suck. but if you have great hands these things will bring forth every nuance of your playing. i was blown away by that neck bucker compared to the copper. the bridge bucker and the strat pups had the same qualities. clear, open tones with beautiful harmonics.

i asked evan if i could have a set and he said no :(

Sounds amazing! Thanks for the review!

Re: Zephyr Silver

If I had the cash, I'd buy a set. Why not? Gonna spend the money on something anyway, why not on something I really like?
