$1000 average run-of-the-mill Mexican Stratocasters how did we get to this point ?

Nup. You won't get EVH tone without the distortion box on no matter how much tone is in your fingers.

You abandoned your original argument, that a distortion box makes it not matter who the player is.
You won't get EVH tone by just turning a distortion box on.
You won't get EVH tone without EVH fingers, regardless of what distortion box you have.

Just to play devils advocate…..

If Eddie’s tone is all in his fingers regardless of the source of his dirt, why did his tone change so drastically in the Sammy years when he was playing different guitars and amps?

Look, the fact of the matter is that every piece of the chain affects the tone.
There is no 1 specific thing that makes or breaks it.

And so many are under the delusion it was a Peavey.

I do not think anyone is saying technique is the only factor, but it is a leading factor. Everything contributes to your guitar tone, including the room you are playing in. EVH's equipment evolved over the years, especially when he started using Eventide. A harmonizer will make a radical change to your tone. However, he always sounded like EVH no matter what rig or signal chain he played through.

its true eddie sounded like eddie cause the way he played, but there were some significant tone changes through out the years. shows that there is a lot that goes into "your sound" but gear isnt necessarily the most important one

Yes but what you’re talking about is Eddie’s inflections. The way he fretted a note or articulated a phrase etc. Those things are specific to the player.
Actual guitar tone is something completely different. Imo of course.

How you allow a note to bloom, the vibrato, and where you are playing in the fret will affect the tone. As will picking dynamics and muting. As you said, those things are specific to the player. As I said you can give a novice the world's best signal chain and guitar and the tone will still suffer. And once again I am not saying technique is the only or main driver for tone but it is a huge component.

I suppose we have to assume that the player is competent in a variety of areas f we discuss this topic.
A beginner or novice will likely sound bad no matter what. Lol

And I agree that technique is just one component. How big it small it is….who knows. I would think that might be player dependent as well.

The people who seem most concerned about toanz that I've run into also tend to be the ones who aren't competent in a variety of areas of playing though.

i just found a 2004 rw board squire standard strat that i kinda forgot about. gotta says its not a bad guitar, though the board has dried so i need to clean up the fret ends a bit. are the newer ones better? maybe a bit, but not by a ton
