$1000 average run-of-the-mill Mexican Stratocasters how did we get to this point ?

Really, isn't tone in the ear of the listener?

I'm pretty sure the biggest single aspect of tone is the strings. That's the main difference between a P-Bass and a Telecaster if I remember correctly.

But the strap is connected to the guitar by the strap button/lock, so maybe THAT is the biggest factor.

I think you're forgetting the tonal impact of the metal alloy used in making the screw that attaches to the strap button/lock. That part actually IN CONTACT WITH THE WOOD so therefore is responsible for bringing vibrations to the strap and cannot be overlooked.

I think I can make a strat or tele for 1000 bucks. handmade, in NL, with premium parts.

Let me think:

body: 80
neck + fretboard+ frets + trussrod + nut: 150
tuners: 40
pickups: 100
trem: 80
Subtotal: 450
Stuff like sandpaper, glue, lacquer (any color, open pore nitro): 50
Total: 500

That leaves me 500 as my own wage. If I can squeeze out the guitar under 15 hours, I will make a small profit.

Add a Mono Sleeve (+150) and shipping, and for 1250 bucks you've got a handmade strat to your (basic) specs.

High gloss, though, is more expensive, since that takes WAY more work.

I can make you an LP with specs like this, for 1350 (100 extra for the top). Any color, as long as it remains open pore satin.

Who wants to play ball and order such a basic guitar? ;) ;)

I paid $1800 to have this custom made to my specs, so I hear what you’re saying.

All's I can say is, my first guitar was a MIM Strat my parents bought me for $450 back in 2000 or so. I sold it in 2015 and wish I hadn't.

Quality and playability I would have put up against my buddy's MIA Fenders any day. But I believe we're all in agreement that Mexico or Indonesia, China, South Korea... They're all a big step up compared to the turn of the millennium.

So if MIM is the new MIA, I'll go international if I have to

I bought an MIM for $350 probably more than 10 years ago. I guess it's time to restore it and sell it.
