Re: 2000 DeArmond M72

Very nice; the Black Flame is a M72 yes? What model is the cool Black ES125 looking one? Taking it you dig the Gold Tone and 2000 Series Pickups since they're still in there. ;)

Starfire with DynaSonic pickups. The new PRS Vela has one of those in the neck position.

I usually leave any stock pickup that's good at what it does........and use the guitar for it's particular sound, instead of trying to change it into something else.

The M-72 is a good guitar to use for clean humbucking tones, but also sounds good with gain. I sorta consider these my "50's tone guitars."

Re: 2000 DeArmond M72

The guitars and the pickups seem well received. Seeing M72/75/77 on eBay and Reverb in good shape anywhere from $375-$599.99 or more. One dinged up M72 at Guitar Center for $249.99. I definitely thought the one I grabbed was a solid nice playing and sounding guitar for the price. I don't think I've seen a negative review on them from anyone who has had one, more like, "I wish I hadn't sold it".

That Starfire looks sweet. I bet those pickups and the hollow or semi-hollow body just sing.

Re: 2000 DeArmond M72

I knew it had been several months since I last played my Dearmond M-72, so I ran it into my Fender Vaporizer and it all came back to me.

I forgot that I used it on a session as an open G guitar. It was tuned like Keith Richard's tele.....open G for rhythm and slide. Duh...that's what I use this guitar for, and I totally forgot that.

I picked it up, and voila. My favorite electric slide guitar! It sounds so great in alternate tunings because of the lower output Goldtone pickups.

Muttz, Great score and gorgeous guitar!! Heckuva deal!! I always thought those pickups were kinda ugly, but I hear they sound great! The clear pickguard is cool too. allows the top to show.

Gearjoneser, Love the black flame one!!

Re: 2000 DeArmond M72

I've spent a few nights playing this and I actually like the DeArmond Hubmuckers but I think the Cor-Tek Pots are limiting their true tonal potential. I believe it would sound vastly improved and open up the tone with my usual DiMarzio 500K Push:Pull Volume to split the DeArmond HBs since they're 4 wire as well as putting in Fender TBX Tone Controls. I've got a Gibson TP6 Fine Tuning Stop Tail and a pair of Vintage Schaller Tuners that may make it onto it as well.

*** Edit: Nope...not messing with the pots. Leaving it as is; like the sound enough that I don't want to mess with changing anything. ;)

Yeah, I've thought about rewiring it with quality pots, since that's the only weak link on the Dearmonds, but they seem good enough for a guitar that's not my main player. Also, I wonder if I'd run into issues like having to enlarge the holes to accommodate CTS pots......not sure if the stock ones are smaller.

Re: 2000 DeArmond M72

Yeah; I like the tone on each pickup now that I've got them dialed in-don't want to mess that up or make it sound like either of my other guitars. Think you summed it up nicely:

Re: 2000 DeArmond M72

Ever since I posted in this thread, I've been playing my M-72 in open G with slide, plugged into my Fender Vaporizer with Way Huge Red Llama. I think I'm in love with the M-72 as my dedicated electric slide guitar.
