335 STYLE AND SIZE...WITH STRAT PICKUPS?

darnright

Has anyone ever seen one? It sounds like it would be a really warm and sweet sounding guitar. I have never seen one myself, but I love the warmth of a 335 and the sweetness of a Strat.....I would love to try one.

Re: 335 STYLE AND SIZE...WITH STRAT PICKUPS?

I'd love to have an ES-335 with a strat layout, mostly because I'm finding that my two main guitars are strats and 335's.

My newest guitar is a Gibson Custom Shop Chris Cornell sig ES-335 that came with Lollar's humbucker sized Filtertrons......Lollartrons. AMAZING pickups! They're essentially a cross between singles and humbuckers.
If you have a dual humbucker guitar and want that fat single coil vibe, Lollartrons are pretty impressive.
I don't think Duncan makes fullsize Filtertrons, but they make the Phat Cats and P Rails and maybe a few other similar pickups.

Re: 335 STYLE AND SIZE...WITH STRAT PICKUPS?

Before Uli Roth played strats, he put strat pickups in his firebird (there is live footage on yootoob if anyone cares). It looks strange, but youshould be able to do at least 2 strat pickups in a 335 with not too much effort.

Re: 335 STYLE AND SIZE...WITH STRAT PICKUPS?

To whom it may concern; The MetalManiac does not approve of Strat pickups in a 335.Just for the record.

Re: 335 STYLE AND SIZE...WITH STRAT PICKUPS?

I put a tele neck pickup in my singlecut hollowbody. Like it. Prone to hum though. I know 335 is semihollow but maybe you'd better use noiseless pickups if you wanna do it. You gotta love experiment.

Re: 335 STYLE AND SIZE...WITH STRAT PICKUPS?

I don't want to discourage you from making such a daring experiment, Dave, even though honestly, I'm afraid it wouldn't work quite as well as expected.

Re: 335 STYLE AND SIZE...WITH STRAT PICKUPS?

Now this is going back a ways, but Univox used to make a bolt on hollowbody named, "The Custom." It had single coils instead of humbuckers. That may be something you might want to look into. I had one at one time, but was forced to sell a lot of my guitars at one time due to a financial emergency.

This is like the one I had.

Re: 335 STYLE AND SIZE...WITH STRAT PICKUPS?

If you're going for Strat sweetness specifically, put a Fralin in there to increase the odds of getting sweetness. I think Fralin sacrifices some all around versatility just to make his Strat pickups extra sweet, so for the sake of the experiment, go to the extreme.

Re: 335 STYLE AND SIZE...WITH STRAT PICKUPS?

Get one (Dot/335) with P-90's. Sweeter than any start, cuts better than any hum bucker.

Re: 335 STYLE AND SIZE...WITH STRAT PICKUPS?

I was talking to my local luthier about this today. He suggested one of the Godin semi-hollows w/P-90's.

I will need to do some playing. Thanks guys!!

I will never understand why Gibson, ibanez, Yamaha, etc, never tried this. For all the impractical, unrefined gizmos and gadgets that Gibson has developed the last few years, they finally offer an lp with p90 neck and humbucker bridge. It only took 60 years to offer that. I thought I would have seen crazier variations in the 80's, when everyone was buying super strats, and Gibson was tanking. Furthermore, fender offered the Strat in more variations, and sold a ton of them. Gibson was to ignorant to follow a successful trend.

I bet single coils in a hollow body are feedback machines with stock junk in it.

Re: 335 STYLE AND SIZE...WITH STRAT PICKUPS?

ESP made a 335 shape with Antiquity II Surfers in the neck/mid/bridge w/ custom baseplates and a strat trem for Japanese rock guitarist Sugizo (Luna Sea/X-Japan), but I haven't been too successful in tracking down any clips of him actually playing it. Not that it matters since he seems to use a ton of effects when he plays.

Look for the ESP Eclipse E-I if you want to look at it. Pretty funky. Semi-hollow alder body with a hard maple neck and rosewood fingerboard. Then again, most of this guy's signature models were Floyded Gibson-scale alder-bodied Les Pauls with SSS pickups and 24 fret ebony fingerboards on maple necks.

When I think of dream guitars, the thought of an ES-335 with single coil pickups is up there. Technically, I know that Filtertrons are a kind of humbucking pickup, but there's a twang and clarity that I really, really like about those pickups so if the Lollartrons share that vibe, I'm sure that guitar is amazing. I'd be inclined to buy a Gretsch, but so many of them are covered in thick, hard plastic and I really like the satin sheen to yours, Joe.

I've contemplated it . . .

You know what might be cool? Imagine these pups, (or any singles, for that matter, maybe P-90's), with a simple up/down toggle switch. "Up" would select both pups in parallel, using the top two knobs for master vol/tone. "Down" would be both pickups in series with the bottom master vol/tone. Both positions would be noiseless, and you'd have truly independent control over the volume and tone of both modes.

There may be a 339 in my future. :scratchch
