40-50w tube head suggestions for club gigs.

Re: 40-50w tube head suggestions for club gigs.

A friend of mine has a Laney IRT60 head and I can't say enough bad things about it. Fizzy, cold. Sterile cleans and pedal-like drive tones. I hate it beyond belief. I hate the million push pulls it has, too.

As described, I'd go for a Jet City JCA50H. Doesn't have power scaling as such, but it sounds great at lower volumes anyway. Killer amp.

Also, nothing wrong with a Marshall DSL50 head. And at the risk of being laughed and shown the door at, try the Boss Katana head through a nice cabinet. You might be surprised.

And now we have to Origin series, which is also lower-cost, built-in-Asia, and also has a 50 Watt head (the most powerful amp in the series).

Single channel with a boost function. Might be too simplistic, but some of the people who have played with them seem to like them. Personally I like the retro styling, too, but they are obviously built to a price point. (No corners, for instance.)

I like what I’ve heard (demos) of these amps but there are 2 things I don’t like
No Fx loop
It’s only a single channel.
Old school is cool....to a point.

I very clearly see a loop in that picture you quoted.

+1 on Splawn, but I would suggest the Street Rod. Great for gigs or home and clean channel is amazing!

So there is....so there is.
Make that ONE thing I don’t like about these amps.
Even though it’s a single channel amp, that probably won’t stop me from buying one at some point.
It’s just that 2 channels is a nice feature.

These amps look like they are designed to be played in two ways that are old school. First, they are low gain so more gain must be obtained from over driving the power amp and/or a pedal. Hence the 5 watt and 1 watt modes so you can crank the amp. Secondly, the spectrum of clean tones to over driven tone is obtained by guitar volume riding and picking dynamics. Whether that catches on with modern players remains to be seen. It might run into the same road block as the Vintage Modern did, with those old school players still preferring a NMV plexi, and modern players left scratching their heads on how to best use it.

Yeah, I absolutely agree. Like I said, I’d still buy one. The plexi-like design/tone/feature set still appeals to me. But a dedicated clean channel is nice too.
My 2204 is obviously a single channel amp so I plug into the low input which essentially gives me a clean channel and I use a Blackstar HT Dual pedal for my dirt. It actually worked out pretty good with that setup.
The pedal itself Is tube driven plus it’s still running through the Marshall circuitry.
If I’m not mistaken this is similar to what a lot of the 80’s guys were doing except they were using rack gear (ADA-MP1) and not pedals.

Thanks everyone for their continued suggestions on this.

As it so happens, my needs have changed unexpectedly but this is still useful information. I'm not quite sure what I'm gonna need in the upcoming future but these amps are not out of the question. :)
