Re: 6v6 Heads?

Whenever I'm cranking my old Gibson Falcon, I keep wondering how that would sound running through a 4 or 2x12... You know...

Re: 6v6 Heads?

One of the Germinos will run 6V6s or EL34s...don't remember which one but it's just a duet so you are under 30 watts...

The problem us 6V6 lovers have is that no one wants to use a quad of 6V6s it's easier and cheaper to use a duet of 6L6s or EL34s.

victoria double deluxe has four 6v6 tubes as well.

yup. el34's sound closer than 6l6's but still not the same.

i havent tried the jj6v6 in any 6l6 type amps. have you actually tried it?

Yeah I've heard that the 6V6s are closer to EL34s, which makes a lot of sense honestly.

The only thing I've got JJ 6V6s in is my Vibro-Champ. It replaced a blackplate. Sounds good IMO. I might get some for the Silvertone.

Re: 6v6 Heads?

These are great times for lovers of the 6V6 quad...

Victoria will make you a head version of the Double deluxe. With the stouter rectifier choice it puts out 36w. Interestingly enough, my tech found out if you run an 8 ohm load into my DD (instead of the standard 4 ohm load) it'll push out 50w!. -This amp is the killer choice if you want tweed deluxe, only bigger. Here's Greg V strangling one.

Swart's amazing Super Space tone 30 head isn't quite up to your wattage requirement, but it sounds killer. Greg V again...

Divided by 13 make the 37w FTR37. Pete Thorn's clips of this amp are just sick: -Clip 1
-Clip 2

Slightly down the price range is the Orange rockerverb 50 head. A very nice, flexible channel switcher. I won't pretend it's up there with the previous amps I listed, but it does a nice BF deluxe-ish tone and a good Brit od and high gain. you could cover a lot of ground with one as a gigging amp.

And this just in: there is a prototype of a new 65 amps 4x6V6 amp floating around California. That could well be the daddy of them all...

On the subject of the JJ 6V6S tube, I've got a new quad in my Vic and they sound great. Almost the same as the stock GT 6V6S tubes. -probably the same tubes. The 6V6S is a larger, stouter sounding tube than the 6V6GT, and I've heard it described as more similar to a 6l6 than a 6V6. Despite this, I find it has more ability to nail the marshall thing than any other non-el34 tube type.

A friend of mine had a testing session with the local JJ importer and his flexi 50. They found that their favorite valve of all the types they tried in that amp was the 6V6S...

Ouch.

Ouch.

Not only is Pete Thorn my hero, but jeez-loueez... that thing sounds pants-wettingly awesome.

Yeah. Not a bad amp by the sound of it.

I have a friend who is about to import Swart, and already brings in 65, and another friend who is waiting to bring in some Div13s. So hopefully in a few months time I'll get to stand in a room with my Vic, a Div13 and a Swart and get a feel for what I like best. And then there's the new 65 'Memphis'. Dunno when that becomes official, but those 65 guys can sure build an amp.

I've actually yet to come across a 4x6V6S amp that wasn't killer in some way. Even the Orange was very cool. And I'm told there's an old early 90s Crate 4x6V6 amp designed by Lee Jackson that does killer 80s metal tones...

Re: 6v6 Heads?

Scott_F had a post a while back. He was testing the waters if he should add a 4 x 6V6 amp to his Celtic lineup?
