What kind of amp should be part of the equation...

What amp(s) do you have?

Re: A GROWLY Sound for a Les Paul

What amp/pedals do you have? What kind of music do you play (band/guitarist tone examples) ?
What pickups are in the guitar now, what exactly is it that you don't like about them ?

Re: A GROWLY Sound for a Les Paul

When I think old school growl i think LP with lower output PAFs through a cranked tweed amp - alnico speaker breakin up in sweet ways. Gotta be more specific though when it comes to what you want...

Re: A GROWLY Sound for a Les Paul

Great!! We're off to a good start!!

I have a Savage Audio Blitz 50. Which is a balls to the wall tube amp, a bit like a cross between a Fender Bassman and a Marshall.

I want it to GROWL in a vintage/ grunge kind of way.

Suggestions??

Speakers in a 2X12 cabinet

Pickups in a Les Paul?

Thanks!!!

Re: A GROWLY Sound for a Les Paul

You could always try Weber alnico speakers lower wattage ones. They'll break up and give you a dirtier warmer sound. LP you can go for Pearly Gates, theyre kinda aggressive sounding but still got that PAF vibe.

Re: A GROWLY Sound for a Les Paul

Oh, I forgot to tell you all the pups now.

I am replacing the stock ceramic pups in a classic (way too hot). i want the distortion to come from the amp not the pickup

Re: A GROWLY Sound for a Les Paul

Screamin' Demon, '59, or Pearly Gates would all propably do it. Demon is a bit hotter than PAF, with more highs and tight bass. PG is high-ish output PAF with more high mids because of the asymmetrical wind (one coil is wound hotter). '59 is a balanced medium output PAF style with strong bass and highs.

Re: A GROWLY Sound for a Les Paul

I thought about the PGs but I am afraid they will be too trebley and thin sounding?? Are they super thin in the bridge?

Oh, the cabinet I am going into is a 2X12 open back. No speakers yet.

I want GROWL!! I'm hungry for the GROWL !!!

Roaaaaarrrrr!!

Re: A GROWLY Sound for a Les Paul

No, the PG's aren't super thin. They have Alnico II magnets which gives them a warm quality.

Re: A GROWLY Sound for a Les Paul

If I was going Celestion, which would give me the growl in a 2X12 open back cabinet, with alnico 2 pups??

Also, would PGs or Seth Lovers growl more for that grunge type tone?

listen to some early ZZ top, and then decide whether or not you want a set of pearly gates(based on the pickups in billy gibbons' '59 les paul he calls pearly gates) btw what are the stock pickups you are replacing? a simple magnet swap might get you where you're goin'. but the pearly gates are as "growly" as it gets as far as les paul tone and as far as i'm concerned.

I have no experience with P-90s. Will they clean up ok or are they a one trick pony? Who plays them to give me an idea of sound? How far off from vintage humbuckers are they? Finally do they hum like crazy (noise)?

Re: A GROWLY Sound for a Les Paul

Don't buy celestions. There are way too many options for LESS $$$, whilst giving you MORE quality.

WEBER, WHAREHOUSE, EMINENCE, etc.

agreed. if you have a 50W tube amp, your speakers need to handle 100W total (50W is the clean power rating, not overdriven). for reasonably priced speakers, the Private Jack will have the nice thick Greenback tone that can really get the low-mid growl. The Tonespotter will also have great bass and mids but it's voiced a little closer to the late 1970s/early 1980s Celestions (like the G12-65).

If $$ is not a concern, Scumback speakers will give you plenty of growl and they have an incredible 3-D feel that you can't get from a Celestion or Eminence (and I love Eminence Red Coat speakers . . . ). I personally would go with one Scumback M55 and one M75 (one bass cone, one lead cone). these are based on the original Celestion Greenbacks but you can get them in higher power ratings.

As far as pickups, the Pearly Gates can growl like no other. I love the low output but aggressive tone, especially in the neck. the bridge shouldn't sound thin unless your LP is a little on the bright side . . . but you could always go with a Custom Shop '78 which has uneven coils for bite (like the PG), hotter winding for more mids (but still only 9k), and the custom wind sounds a little more open than a regular production pickup. the Custom shop Brobucker would be another good option, especially for an LP.

1. Yes, they will clean up way better than the majority humbuckers
2. No
3. The sound of P90s is exactly what you described, raw, raunchy growly tone.
4. Most P90s buzz but the Phat Cat is hum canceling
