So, about seven years ago I was brought into a band to play guitar. We wrote a bunch of songs, recorded and album, played a bunch of places and then after a few years called it quits.

At the time I was playing a Line 6 Flextone I XL amp. It did the job.

It looks like the band may be re-forming for some nostalgia trip.

My Flextone is long gone.

I'd be looking for something to keep up with the other guitar player that loves cranking a Peavey Classic 50, the one with 4 x 10's I believe.

I already have a cab, a Marshall JCM800 series 2 x 12, so I'd be looking for a head.

It needs to have channel switching, at least two, preferably three.

First channel needs to be pretty crisp. Second has to have some decent hair on it. And the third be balls-out heavy.

My knee-jerk reaction was to go with a JSX. Another thought might be a 5150 and chuck an Overdrive in there. I only know the Legacy's by reputation. I do know Mesa makes some very nice gear as well.

The odds are this isn't something I'm going to keep. We'd likely play a dozen or so shows over the course of six months and then that would be it. I'd need something used that I could unload for about what i paid for it.

This is something I'm gigging out with, so there's no way a Bogner or a Deizel is going to happen!

Thanks...

mesa mark VI

orange rockerverb (2 channels)

Re: A Question You Never Thought I Would Ask

I wonder how a Mesa Stiletto would be? It's only 2 channels but can be set up from British inspired grind as well as crunch. If you bought a used Mesa you could definately get what you paid for it. Peavy, maybe not but if the amp is great who cares. Give the JSX a shot, the specs sound right for you.

Re: A Question You Never Thought I Would Ask

Orange Tiny Terror and a Twin Tube distortion!

Marshall JVM?

A used Fender Hot Rod Deville?

Mesa Stiletto also sounds like a good plan.

The thing would get swamped.

Marshall JVM?

.....and finding one used?

A used Fender Hot Rod Deville?

I had a HotRod Deluxe for a few years....hated it.

Nowhere NEARLY enough gain and I need something that's just a head.

Mesa Stiletto also sounds like a good plan.

It's a potential.

Re: A Question You Never Thought I Would Ask

The Legacy would blow the Peavey out of the water volume wise. Good amp, and it'll do what you're looking for, but damn, those things are loud.

brunyans amp rocks - the clean is awesome. and the gain sounds just like the evergrove clips. its basically a 2 channel gain monster for $600. depending on your ebay feedback you might even make a little money.

Re: A Question You Never Thought I Would Ask

To be perfectly honest, I prefer my JSX to the Legacy.

The Legacy does clean and gritty tones fairly well, but I wouldn't say it's the best 'balls out' amp. It's too loose/raw for my tastes.

I'd go for the JSX - absolutely killer clean channel, great in-between tones (albeit closer to the higher gain side than lower, on the crunch channel), and my personal favorite lead channel.

Re: A Question You Never Thought I Would Ask

I liked the JSX I played. Very thick yet articulate gainy tones.

There's a Splawn Pro Mod on Ebay right now that was hovering around $950 this afternoon... I still regularly sex mine up at every chance.

If you need more volume than a 120watt peavey, it's time to look into PA...

I would suggest a JSX. Also, classic 50's aren't all that loud, my 6505 will completely drown it out.

The pro mod is an absolute nut kicker of an amp. My friend imports them and gets them checked by a tech upon landing. He rated one at nearly 200watts. His exact words were:

"sh*t!"

-a secondhand quick rod or competition would be ideal for the job you're after.

I agree...120's way overboard.

The downside is that the other guitar player typically just dimes his amp and that's it....that's his sound and you either keep up or you drown.

I like the idea of a JSX alot. Of all the amps I've read about it seems to have the most distinctive sound between the channels. The downside is that it clocks in at 120 watts....

The Splawn sounds interesting...but that's more bread than I really want to have tied up in this.

I have to wonder if I could get "there" a Celtic....but of course...I would HAVE to keep it! If I could use it to play Blues and Classic Rock with as well though....that wouldn't be too terrible.

In all honesty, my JSX's 120 watts is not nearly as loud as my 5150's 120 watts, and probably not as loud as my old Mesa's 50W, and you can always pull two of the powertubes.

Don't get me wrong - it keeps up in a band situation just fine, but the volume controls on both channel and master are usually up around 6-7. That said, I'm in a deathmetal band, so I'm competing against another 4x12 and a bear behind the kit.

You may have to rule that one out altogether, then - at least the Pro Mod. I don't think you'll find ANY Splawn cheaper than the one on Ebay right now. I have two of the KT88s pulled in mine and it's still crazy loud. In my band that works fine, but if volume is a concern for you I'd look elsewhere. Splawns don't really like to be attenuated, either.

Re: A Question You Never Thought I Would Ask

Engl Savage 120 or Blackmore Signature. Both of those heads have four channels ranging from crystal clear to all out extreme metal. They also do everything in between and sound great while doing it.
Only problem might be availability in the US
