A rare NPD for me!

Guess what came in the mail? Here's a quick review:

It is the Tech21 Fly Rig 5. Designed to get a great sound direct to a PA or through a backline amp, I am going to use it when we are provided a backline at festivals and when we use our own IEM system live. First, it is tiny. About half the size of my computer keyboard. It can easily fit in the pocket of a guitar case as a backup, but really is designed so it can be a primary direct amp. It has a modulated delay with tap tempo, a Sansamp (modeled after their Blonde pedal, but this one has reverb), a Plexi-type distortion, and a boost. The lights are little knobs,
It is really dynamic, the distortion is smooth, and it sounds awesome into the effects return of an amp or into a PA. It also sounds great with pedals in the front of it too.

Sweetwater. I ordered it back in May, so I guess they are shipping in order.

Re: A rare NPD for me!

Awesome! Glad you finally got it. Any plans for a soundclip?

How does the build quality seem? Like the tactile feel of the knobs; quality of the jacks and enclosure...stuff like that. Worth $250?

This is on my very short list of gear to purchase.

Re: A rare NPD for me!

All good! When you consider the price of a Blonde pedal, a Plexi pedal and their DLY pedal, then add reverb and boost, you are well over
$250. Certainly worth it, and nothing like it on the market. It will probably be providing the amp sound on my next blog that needs sound clips.

Re: A rare NPD for me!

That looks great! I'm really getting the itch to get one but I can't really justify the purchase.

How good does it sound in recordings?

Re: A rare NPD for me!

I haven't recorded with it yet, but what I heard online sounded great. The sound of this is squarely in the Fender/Marshall camp. The bass isn't like a Recto, and there isn't the compression of a Mark IV. If you get 'your sound' from your hands rather than a specific amp or effects, this thing is a monster.

Re: A rare NPD for me!

I really like the concept of these pedals. I know I would still want to use a real amp and speakers, but it's cool to see a simple Multi-FX for going straight to the board with.

I'm glad minimalism is taking over guitar equipment. We're seeing fewer devices that do a billion different things but we're seeing more simple, elegant, quality devices that just do what they're supposed to do. Love it.

Re: A rare NPD for me!

I did plug this into the effects return of my Trademark 60, which essentially makes it a Power Engine. Wow! This Fly Rig thing rocks!

Exactly what I'm looking for. Checked a nearby shop today, and they didn't have any...of course.

I'm looking forward to the possibilities here.

Re: A rare NPD for me!

No, it isn't a major difference, but you are EQing twice, and would be going through the Sansamp circuitry twice. That is a lot of EQ. You can kind of re-eq the EQ out, but that takes time, and it isn't perfect.

Thanks for the insight. Can't wait to get mine and try it both in front and in-the-loop of my amps. I'll hold off getting a Power Engine 60 pending my tests.

Re: A rare NPD for me!

Btw, you can also go into the front of the Trademark 60 ( or any amp), and use the Plexi, delay, and boost functions just like normal pedals.
