About the forum pickup polls....a personal note...

Re: About the forum pickup polls....a personal note...

Or how about anyone who doesn't want to buy the custom one can get a brobucker or EVH or whatever else instead? I know that I'm still interestedin buying the creation, whatever it is. I won't buy it if it's black, but I still am interested.

But if people can choose to buy the creation or another custom shop pup at a discounted price, everyone will be happy!

Re: About the forum pickup polls....a personal note...

Here's another idea, if you want... instead of designing your own pickup, maybe you can all choose one custom shop pickup, like the Brobucker, the 78, the RTM, the Super V, or whatever.

Then, if it works out, next year you can do another special forum deal.

That way you all get a custom shop pickup at a special price and Mike gets to keep his sanity.

Whaddyathink?

Simply: a fantastic idea.

Mike, You Rock. You were doing your best to help facilitate the process.

You shouldn't feel bad. You have a lot in common with President Lincoln
You can please all of the people some of the time, or some people all of the time, but you can never please all of the people all of the time.

You did great. The spearhead gets all the force upon impact.

Re: About the forum pickup polls....a personal note...

Well we can allways buy one of the "current" cs shop models! That's very kind of you Evan ,and that shows alot of respect from you.But i would go with The A8 and PATB design if it's possible! It's something new ,and i know very well how it can sound like!
That's why i am explaining all the time what a PATB does and sounds like!
Give MJ the chance to bring us a new magical PU!That's all i want!
Cheers!!!

Re: About the forum pickup polls....a personal note...

Evan, that is a gret idea EXCEPT for one thing...

I'm really looking forward to trying both A8 and PA!!

either way, I'm in.

Re: About the forum pickup polls....a personal note...

I prefer 2 EVH's and 2 Brobucker's most definately..thing is-next year, same issues, same discussions..

However-I reall yappreciate the offer Evan. If time is a matter-count mne in on the current models.

Re: About the forum pickup polls....a personal note...

Mike,

I don't think anyone, least of all you, deserves any blame or criticism. I guess my concern has more to do with the process. We had something in mind with the Brobucker before we came up with the specs. That is what was missing here. It is not your fault or anyone elses. Hindsight is 20/20. My only suggestion if this happens again, is that we have a concept in mind before we go in blind on the specs. Evan has suggested that it might happen again, so we should have a lot of ideas that we can bat around before and if that ever happens again.

Thanks for taking on the leadership role here. Sometimes it is a thankless task.

Re: About the forum pickup polls....a personal note...

Mike, first let me say that your taking on this role is commendable. Somebody had to step up and take control of this, and you’ve conducted the polls fairly and quickly. In my opinion we are at the point where continuing the voting in the same manner we have been is the best way to fairly nail down this pickup design.

I’ve made a couple remarks about the process, but they had nothing to do with how you had set up the polls. I share LJKing’s sentiment that design by committee never works, and any remarks I may have made in that regard were not to be taken personally by anyone. It was offered only as a little constructive criticism.

If there’s anything we learn of this process it’s that if we ever get this opportunity again that we conduct our conversations in a different manner. My only remaining criticism with this entire process has been the selection of fairly exact specifications without having an idea of the type of voice we wanted in this pickup. If there is a next time, I advise that be the first topic of discussion. That would make for more focused discussions when it comes the selection of the details. Like anything else in design, you have to begin with the “big idea” before ironing out the particulars. No one person is to blame here, but the process that the majority of the community all but demanded.

Well, I would be more than for the idea of choosing a current CS model but, nobody seems to know anything about them except possibly the 78 model. I would love to hear some sort of description of these other models before I was to shell out whatever they may cost. I am sure many other people are probally in the same boat. If you could possibly help us out or direct us to where we could find descriptions for the current CS models that would be RAD!

Re: About the forum pickup polls....a personal note...

Mike,

Thanks for all the poles. I missed out on the Brobucker, and I have always had a pretty good idea of what I wanted out of a CS pup. I suspect that many others have a good idea of what they would like also, I think the poles help a lot in the figuring out what the majority of members would like.

Even if it doesn't end up being exactly what I have in my head, I am ordering at least one. I haven't heard a bad Duncan yet, and I can always get my check book and order exactly what I want at any time. I kind of find the whole concept a bit historical in the fact that I don't know of any other company that would provide this kind of an offer to their customers.

I also have no issue with Evan's idea of offer a limited run of current CS pups for the members. I would love a '78 or two.

Mike, don't take any people's comments to heart. You typically only notice/remember the negative things when you are take the lead. I commend your efforts!

Please remeber that many of us applaud your initiative. Thanks again.

Re: About the forum pickup polls....a personal note...

thanks for the support guys.

here's what's been decided since lots of people like the idea....

the final poll will be this new 13.5k A8 VS the EVH '78, The Iommi, The Super V, the RTM DeMartini, Scott Ian El Diablo

i don't think there is a point to another brobucker run since it was done last year. i'm sorry to the guys that missed out but i think this should be about something new. the brobucker can be ordered by a single person at any time...sure you'll pay more but it's not like you can never have one. it's time to do something new and only repeat when we run out of ideas!

back on a more personal note...i own two '78s and an Iommi and they are both KILLER pickups and neither wold be a let down to me if they won! i'm itching for an RTM to be honest since it's the new kid on the block with some cool specs!

Re: About the forum pickup polls....a personal note...

I need another CS bucker like I need another hole in my head! LOL I was hoping for a Tele bridge pup myself, but I'm not worried about it.

I think Evan is giving you guys a great chance here to get things back on track since there isn't a clear direction. Also you might want to consider doing a more well known model (78,BB) in a PA configuration, or with A8 or both.

Just something I thought I'd throw out.

He might just be on to something here... I think the polls have clearly indicated a VERY strong support for the PA, if this contraption voted on in the polls gets out-voted in the end by a certain CS pickup already in existence maybe we should then do a vote on whether or not to make any tweaks to that pickup like for example using PA poles. In fact, that could be the starting block for something for next year:
- Make the first poll on which current SD pickup to base it off of (similar voicing)
- Vote on whether or not to make it higher or lower resistance
- Make a poll for the magnet
- Make a poll for the pole pieces
- Make a poll for colour
In the end you'd get something that could still have a different resistance, magnet, and pole pieces than whatever was decided on in the first poll, but it would give people an idea of what to shoot for and what it will sound like in the end.

Personally I'm still excited about the forum pickup, not because I think it will be the best pickup ever but because it will be something special. Design by committee isn't going to make the best pickup, but it provides an opportunity for the forum to make something special that represents the diverse tastes on here. I want to try the PA poles, I'm curious about A8 (although I wouldn't be disappointed with any choice in magnet) and I think its cool to see something that Seymour Duncan has never really done before. I'm sure with their expertise they could make this an awesome sounding pickup, and so what if the specs are a little bit weird? I say we challenge them to create something great out of it.

Re: About the forum pickup polls....a personal note...

Just a thought… given the uniqueness of this opportunity, I think we would be doing a great disservice to ourselves if we opted for a current CS offering at a discount price. There’s a mystic quality I associate with the Brobucker because of the symbolic meaning of the name and the manner in which it was created and designed. We’re being given that opportunity again. Let’s do something special with it.

Starting with an existing voicing and modifying it is a great place to start, and mentioned by a few brothers from the very beginning. Anything we can do to give the work done thus far some direction is a good idea.

Re: About the forum pickup polls....a personal note...

Hey mike, shall I remove the other polls?

If you think the pickup thing is hard, try babysitting the Sound Room for a month.................

Re: About the forum pickup polls....a personal note...

My thought, FWIW, is maybe to make such a pickup available 3 to 4 times a year, BUT...with each new pickup, the choices for type and spec of pickup each time is fairly narrow.

In other words, this time it's a Strat bridge pu, next time it's a P90, then it's a vintage-output bridge bucker, then a medium to hot Tele bridge, etc., etc. This way each time you'd have more agreement and a clearer winner.
