Advise on used Ibanez RG320FM

Hi guys,

I've been playing guitar for quite some time and usually look at the classified for used guitars and amps that may be good offers.

I found this Ibanez RG320FM for 180CHF (for simplicity let’s say 1CHF = 1USD) which seemed like a good deal to me. I have a modified strat with a fixed bridge and a single humbucker, a HSS pacifica with a Wilkinson trem and sperzels, so this HH with a FR (Ibby Edge III) seemed like a good addition.

After looking at the ad again, everything seems to be in order, BUT the pressure pads and bolts are missing from the nut, is this a deal breaker? I know that without this parts it will not be “double locking”, but I could order the pads online or even try to make them at my workshop. I try to get the price as low as 150 to compensate for the missing parts.

I had a RG321MH and I really liked the neck and sound of the pickups, this one has pretty much the same hardware, except from the trem/nut and the fact that this body is basswood and the other was mahogany.

What do you think? Should I go for it and find/make those parts or should I pass? I really like the looks of the guitar and will, of course, try it before buying it. I’ve read that the Edge III trem is not that bad, and since it’s my first FR and I’m not a tremolo abuser, it should not be a problem.

Summing up, here are the specs:

RG series

5-way switch (neck series, neck parallel, both, inner coils, bridge series)

Great condition (from the pics)

Infinity 3 & 4 humbuckers

Comes with a Gig bag, not shown in pics

Manufactured in August 2006, from the serial number.

Pressure pads and bolts are missing from the nut.

Re: Advise on used Ibanez RG320FM

I have an RG4EXFM1
Same pickups and EDGE III
like the trem I have some images as it sets up not as one would expect
Solid
As far as tuning goes.
The bridge pickup is fine
The neck is way too hot for my tastes

If you liked the neck on the 321 you'll like this one

It's gonna be way heavier than anything else you have
I rarely play mine but it is beautiful

Re: Advise on used Ibanez RG320FM

Sure. I'd go for that. Get some new parts for the locking nut and slap some Dimarzio pickups in that bad boy. Let 'er rip!

Re: Advise on used Ibanez RG320FM

Not sure what parts cost but you could probably fab something easy enough.
Buy it.

Re: Advise on used Ibanez RG320FM

Tough call. Frankly, I've never used the "III" trem before, and yeah I've heard all the complaints.

I don't know about Germany, but in the US we use Rich from "ibanezrules" for parts. It's essential that you get the proper pressure pads, Ibby's are not cool w/o them (I've had a million, worse than FR. )

The price seems ok, and the condition is ok, but you'll almost certainly want to change the pups. Rich is a cool guy and very responsive, and he knows Ibanez like NOBODY else. So I'd shoot him a email and ask (and what you should do about the pressure pads)

Re: Advise on used Ibanez RG320FM

Just a quick update. The seller said that the price was negotiables so I offered him 150CHF and I haven't hear back from him since then. Either he found my offer offensive or he does not want to sell anymore....

Re: Advise on used Ibanez RG320FM

Or he's a lazy b........d :D

I run into guys all the time who simply don't have quick communication skills, forgot they had the listing, sold it and didn't mention that, etc.

Re: Advise on used Ibanez RG320FM

Just to not offend when making a lower offer I like to say something like; It's definitely worth more than what you're asking, however I'm only looking for extreme bargains right now for project/modding guitars.

Re: Advise on used Ibanez RG320FM

If someone gets offended by an offer, they obviously know nothing about price negotiation. Don't bother dealing with them.
