i see people do this all the time man. they get the cheap guitar cuz it's close to what they want, and they're stoked about it for a month or two, then they start seriously considering their next buy...which is a nearly-identical-but-still-cheap guitar.

so they trade in their old guitar at a loss (DUMB) and get something "different" that is essentially the same specs wise with maybe a different finish or some tiny little upgrade (like those Epi's that came with Burstbuckers or whatever) and they're stoked!

for a month or two

and then they start considering their next purchase.

i saved my money for over a year, knowing what i wanted and what kinda price i wanted to pay, and waited til the timing was right. i got a great deal on a guitar that's best described as "enviable" and i play it proudly every day -- i still even gasp a little but when i open the case to pull it out, because i find it so hard to believe that my Gibson Les Paul is MY Gibson Les Paul.

the only guitars i've bought since that Les Paul were bought for insanely cheap prices and intended to be the Les Paul's backup guitars...all of them were sold for a profit...i'll be paying that Les Paul in my death bed.

everything else is a copy; a poseur; a wannabe.

i agree, ive tried guitars bought off internet that aped LesPauls, felt fffffuuuunnnnky, i dunno how folks buy guitars they havent tried. However, i took HEAPS of derision for buying an epi sg special for $109. i LOVE it more now than when i bought it, apparently its mahogany, and with Dmrz Supr D, plays like a revved up Harley. but it wasnt an impulse buy, i tried it, then walked away. i spent more on the spurzels, the pickups, the iommi cross decals, the batwing, but it plays just like i need nay way better, i pick it up every week, maybe more, and brings out playing my other awesome cheapass ax dont.

i hope you buy something youve tried, but dont buy a Gibson LesPaul online. Yes, the one youve played is great, but that company has employees that admit to hoarding the good stuff- which never makes the floor of a store. plus, when the sign. Page was found to have a made in china sticker it raised the final bell fer me: the only good Gibson that matters to you youve already played. i had one, ive played worse, but it was kinda of a dog.
but if you hafta buy online, arent the epi paul ultras well recd around here? im seriously thinkin of gettin one, so, not to hijack, what elements do paul buyers look for? other than maple prettiness, do u strum it unplugged? shd it be tested in standard tuning for some reason of balance? how do gauge a good neck? etc. sorry, ill shut up now....

thanks. Your way outta line about Gibsons IMO. Most of the Hogwash I hear about Gibson USA is from disgruntled haters. Gibsons quality control is top notch.
You buy a Gibson, your pretty much garunteed a splendid guitar.

Dude, quit using your wife and home life as an excuse not to get a critically important Gibson Les Paul. If you don't buy a REAL Les Paul, your nuts will shrink, your technique will perpetually suck and nobody will EVER sign you to a label. Divorce your wife, sell your kids to Croat pimps and PUH-LEASE buy a REAL Les Paul. Your life and societal status depends on it. Besides, then you can post threads where people make drooly comments about how "*****in' awesome it is". Oh and best of all, you can RESELL IT FOR A PROFIT when decide to turn into a "guitar collector".

I used to play in a band with a guy who played one of those with a set of '59s in it. He way overpaid for it. I remember totally scoffing when he pulled out his brand new bolt-on Les Paul but man...that thing sounded insanely great.

I just wish he had've known how to play it better...
