Then why are we having this discussion Glenn? Sit his ass down and you tell him he needs a Les Paul!

Re: Alright this is it: my buddy's choices.

Get your mate to buy the P 90 tele, and after a few weeks he'll realise
he actually wanted the Deluxe and sell it to you at a discount:friday:

It's a bit like being at the bar and trying to decide which of the two
cute babes that are smiling at you, are coming home tonight:cool2:

Share my friend!!

I don't even remember the lame ass argument he gave me about not wanting a Gibson. If I remember correctly, in it, he says he's tired of playing Gibson style guitars and wants something different. I don't want to break his heart, but I really don't think it's a Fender. Though, the tele deluxe is a different kind of fender. something more similar to my Jaguar, which doesn't put out traditional fender tones. What can I say? I tried. When he plays a Studio or a Standard, and loves what he hears, I just hope he won't turn to me and say he made a mistake. Or maybe, I'm wrong, and He's been wrong, and he will like Fender.

Re: Alright this is it: my buddy's choices.

Do you really want a guitar with some other players name on it? what if Jim Adkins does a Ben Rothlinsburger in a couple of months?

I don't really care whose name is on it. I considered the Avril Lavigne Tele for a while simply because it was a telecaster routed for a humbucker.

Re: Alright this is it: my buddy's choices.

Leftfield suggestion.

1) Your friend has some idea of what he wants but this is not exactly as per the spec of any commercially available instrument.

2) Between the two of you, you know how to screw together and wire up a Fender-style electric guitar.

3) Mail order. :D

Re: Alright this is it: my buddy's choices.

I had to go with the setneck P90 setup out of those two. Now if he REALLY wants a Tele type guitar and is going to spend $700 I would tell him to consider a used Hamer T51. Blows those two AWAY. YMMV:cool2:

Would you have kept the checkerboard guard and pink strap locks though? If you strip those off is it still recognisable as Avrils guitar.

is that a plastic nut on a $800 guitar?!

Re: Alright this is it: my buddy's choices.

Graphite-reinforced plastic, probably.

The three I saw in the shop had pink strap locks, not a hard thing to change. Schaller make them in lots of colours so people can colour code their straps so you always get the right strap with the right guitar. (or you use masking tape on the strap and a sharpie)
I'd guess black Tusq as on a Framus or Ibanez they do look like plastic in photos but are not.

Re: Alright this is it: my buddy's choices.

is it just me, or do the frets look pretty huge too? I think I might pick up this tele myself. i was looking at a thinline.

Re: Alright this is it: my buddy's choices.

Oh man, sorry, tied it at 11vs11. I went Adkins. Primarily because I like the looks better, f-hole are hot ;)

Re: Alright this is it: my buddy's choices.

since you intend to get the other one anyway, y'all should just buy 'em both and call 'em 'band guitars'.

Re: Alright this is it: my buddy's choices.

I voted Jim Adkins model because that's what I would get. I like the set neck option and would prefer the P-90s to those humbuckers. Solid vs. semi-hollow? Negligible in this case. Tele headstock vs. shark fin? I like the tele headstock here. I like mahogany/rosewood over all maple necks. $50 price difference doesn't really negate one over the other. I can go either way on the bridge design, but the tune-o-matic would imply a steeper neck angle...might have something to do with sustain. I'd have to play both to find out. Overall, the JA Tele just looks better to me. These are just my preferences, though. Your friend sounds like he already made up his mind. I hope he enjoys the hell out of it.

that's probably why it's a set neck;)

i would vote for the deluxe simply because of the options for changing out the pickups, even if i were to swap in phat cats. then again, i'm not so keen on the deluxe's widerange pickups, and i don't know how likely your buddy is to do that kinda tech work or have it done.

Re: Alright this is it: my buddy's choices.

well, i hear that the wide range HBs arent the same size as replacement HBs

Re: Alright this is it: my buddy's choices.

long scale hollow with duncan p90s vs whatever TF p/ups are in that reissue..?

should probably be looking at a squier tele custom II as well.

I looked at that. im just worried about quality.

Since I got my tubes, and my effects for now, im looking at a new guitar. I already have everything I need, I'm just messing around. The Jaguar and Tele are me, they are my sound. I just want to keep adding axes to the bunch!
