American... Fender, Jensen speakers, I can't think of what tubes are supposed to sound American, but I'm sure someone else can.

British... Vox, Marshall, Celestion speakers, etc.

What do you prefer?

Re: American or British amp tone?

Both.

I like British for rock but American for metal. For cleans I also like both since both have their own distinct flavour.

Re: American or British amp tone?

I dunno.

American cleans usually, love a ncie clean Fender Amp, and British distortion is just awesome, and I love it. But then again I really like Mesa's distortion if set right, I dunno. Too hard, they each have their advantages in my tonal pallette. I choose both.

Re: American or British amp tone?

Has to be British. Soldanos are pretty cool for American amps, but I can't stand Fenders or Mesas.

Re: American or British amp tone?

I really bridge the gap between the two. My laney is a british voiced amp, but run with 6l6 tubes it strikes an amazing mix between the two voices. Furthermore my cabs use texas heats for american tones and legend v12s to preserve the brit sound. I guess im a hybrid or an anamoly or something.

Re: American or British amp tone?

British. For everything.

Marshall, Vox, Matamp, Celestion speakers... this, to me, is the sound of rock.

Re: American or British amp tone?

I like both, but I consider my sound to be EL-34, whether it's clean or gainy.
I think I still like 6L6's over EL-84's though. Anyone who questions EL-34 cleans have never heard handwound A5 singles through a Matchless Chieftain, plexi, or Bogner clean channel. It's a thing of beauty.

Right now, my whole amp collection is purely British or British inspired American amps.

Re: American or British amp tone?

a little bit of both but i guess i lean to american for my ideal tone though. both both sides have their good amps.

Re: American or British amp tone?

Its all about those British mids for me. Just smack you clean in between the eyes. Marshall, Matamp, Orange, Sound City, Hiwatt. Most of my favourite tones are Brit ones. That said, I don't mind a well EQ'd Mesa from time to time.Corrosion of Conformity made them sound mighty fine. I can't get on with them any time i've used them though.

Re: American or British amp tone?

I'm all about American - Gibson guitar plugged into a Fender amp is the sound of the blues IMO. And they give me the cleans I want - and the incredibly fat distortion.

Re: American or British amp tone?

I definately prefer the EL 34 type of drive to 6L6's, although Fender cleans are gorgeous, I love that Marshall Plexi crunch.

Re: American or British amp tone?

I think both have their fair uses. My personally like the on the edge clean of el-84's best but i like the surfier fender cleans too (although i find all the fenders ive played, not many i might add, a bit to trebly)

Re: American or British amp tone?

I like them all.

Currently using EL84 and 6v6 amps. Got an EL34 amp coming in this week, and will eventually replace my Vibrolux with a 6l6 amp.

Quite like that mid-point between the two: the JTM45.

Re: American or British amp tone?

Like them all but I had to go with British... Deep Purple, Queen and other British classic rock bands with classic rock tone... can't help it.

Re: American or British amp tone?

Both. the budda is 'based' on a hot rodded plexi but runs 6l6s. seems to get best of both worlds in all the modes you can run it in but unfortunately i put 6550s in it. :nono:

normal rhythm = fender vibe
pull bright switch = vox tone

normal drive = marshall
pull 'modern' switch = mesa scooped mids

so i like both equally but i think i'm gonna have to vote american cause my amp was made in the u.s.

Re: American or British amp tone?

I like more British toned amps in general.. but my absolute favourite amp I've ever played and heard has to be the Fender Bassman.

Re: American or British amp tone?

If I HAVE TO choose, it's British for me.

LOVES me some molten EL84s :32: :32: :32:

Vox cleans to Vox dirty is the best for me :bigok:
