the best thing i can advise is to set everything on 5 and add/decrease from there because tone is so personal that it is not going to help you if i tell you where to set your controls:14:

Re: Amp Setting for 59'S

i agree, best amp sound is subjective!

i admit i don't have a good way to do this, but i will turn each knob from 0-10, and kind of get a feel for what each one does.

eq settings vary with the amp too, my champ II gets all farty if the bass is up too much, and there is a big difference between 3 and 3.2 (4.8 on the treble, again its picky, its like if you took all the knob settings it can't add up to more than 14.8)

the roland cube, i run 9 on the bass.... that one mids are 5, and highs are 6-8.

running slightly less mids really brings out the distinctive tones you can get with a les paul style guitar, it really makes the middle position distinctive

happy hunting!

Hello All
Thanks for your input, I play both lead and Rythmn in my band, so i need a melllow sound for playing chords.

Re: Amp Setting for 59'S

A mellow sound for playing chords isn't a very clear description.

do you mean a sound with no distortion? Do you mean a warm distortion sound? Do you mean a lot of bass & mids with few highs?

We need a little more help here.

For a CLEAN rhythm sound, I like a setting something similar to:

Gain: ~3
Bass: 7-8
Mids: 3-4
Highs: 8-9
Vol: as appropriate

For a Jazz mellow:
Gain: ~3
Bass:7-8
Mids: 8-9
Highs: 3-5
Vol: as appropriate
* with further hihs rolled off on the guitar to taste

Or, to adjust the lead rhythm sound with the guitar volume:

Gain: wherever it needs to be, based on the sound, to be able to adjust it from clean to scream with the volume knob.

But...I play Les Pauls, and they have some sporty bottom. So I rarely ever use that bass setting. Usually around 5-6 is plenty of bass for MY guitars. I also generally don't switch lead/rhythm sounds - I just goose the volume.

I will also say, the 59 has some pretty strong highs. Again, you are gonna have to use your ears!!!! Tragic, I know....but you can do it. You'll probably want less highs than the setting I recommend.

But also - you could always just roll the tone down a touch for slightly less strident/piercing highs, then turn it up for the solos.

There isn't any "one" correct answer - sorry man. And my guitar will sound TOTALLY different than yours with the same settings.

it not so bad if i am either a Rhythym or lead but i both as you say i will take my time to sort it out, your settings are not far from mine, i find the SD 59's very Sharp and great for lead

Re: Amp Setting for 59'S

The biggest thing for a 59 is a GOOD quality PIO cap or a orange drop at the very least, roll that tone back for the rhythms and back the volume off a tad on the guitar too. Backing the volume off will lessen the gain and make it seem almost brighter so rolling back the tone will mellow out the tone more and thicken it up a little. You will have to play around with your amp settings and adjust to taste of your ear, but thats how you can control any pup a little better for different sounds in case you already weren`t doing that. Alot of guys leave the tone and vol on 10 and with the 59 you are missing the tone boat not playing around with them.

Re: Amp Setting for 59'S

i have a blues junior (modded)

you need to be VERY careful with the bass control or the amp, even when clean, will get VERY flubby - not more than halfway up and maybe even less ... similarly, be careful with the highs so as to not get them way out of balance - again, be careful above halfway up ... to me, that amp lives with its mids control ... you can get a lot of different shades of personality by adjusting the mids across its whole range ... with my strat, i scoop it some ... with my H-H guitar, i can go up about 2/3rds sometimes

i like to crank up the master volume as loud as is reasonable for the application and then find a sweet spot with the preamp gain so as to make it respond well to my picking hand attack and riding the volume knob on the guitar ... by cranking the power amp as high as is useful, you can maximise clean headroom ... then get as dirty as you need with digging in and using the guitar's volume knobs

Re: Amp Setting for 59'S

For a good, warm clean sound, I set my amps:

-treble 1/2 to 3/4's of the way up
-mids 3/4's to 100%
-bass 1/2 to 3/4
-reverb 20 to 30%

Re: Amp Setting for 59'S

my Blues jnr amp settings on my strat are as follows Treble 4, bass 7, mid 7. it sounds great with those setting, i have the original fender single coil pick ups, my tele has Texas Special pick ups and the setting are more or less 5 or 6 and that also sounds good

Re: Amp Setting for 59'S

seems like you are in the right neighborhood ... you'll just likely need to dial back the bass some when you use the H-H setup and maybe goose the treble up a tiny bit

exactly. each amp has a sweet spot, you just have to twist some knobs until you find it

If you raise the pole pieces and lower the bass side of the neck PU, you can take away the boominess. Doing that allows me to get more low end and fullness in my bridge PU.

Not to be derogatory, but.......the only answer I can think of is...you've GOT to be kidding!

Only YOU know what tone you want to achieve. You are sitting right in front of your amp, so tweak a few knobs until you dial in the sound that you want. No one can do this for you.

hence the reason i answered for him to just set everything on the amp at 5(flat) and take it from there.:14:

Re: Amp Setting for 59'S

Guitar Doc, you are so wrong, its easy setting a tone in a house, but its completely different on stage as you should know.
