Amp suggestions

Re: Amp suggestions

I appreciate all the replies.

I picked 30 to 50 watts out of the air. My solid state vypyr head is 30 watts and it kept up with a full band pretty good, but it lost some of its definition at higher volumes. Then again it is solid state. I'm definitely going to look into the diavalo 45 and the jet city 50. They both offer 212 cabs. I just want to be sure I have enough oomph if I do jam with a full band.

The main reason I considered orange right off the bat is I love that crowbar tone. I also like mastodon and others who use them. Plus the heavy Demos on their site are done with a similar guitar as mine and they Sound killer. I like the idea of the shape knob too. Seems to have a ****load of range for one control.

I'll also check out the black star ID series. I'll look into carvin and laney as well. I'll have to drive to ATL to find a guitar center. I think one of the shops here have a test room for bigger amps. I might pick up a micro terror just to see how I like the orange sound. It's only $150. It has a tube preamp and SS power. 20 watts. So many options!

Man one of the first options to consider is always that you can get a clean amp and use it as a pedal/effects platform to create any tone you want. You can run preamps, effects processors, and all kinds of pedals through a good clean amp and you don't have to worry about hooking up power amps, etc... If you want a smooth tone, engage a pedal or preset. If you want to switch to a crunch, raunchy drive, brutal thrash, or clean breakup, all you have to do is engage the device of your choice. This is a cool and affordable way of building a tone arsenal. If you buy a channel switching amp, you might spend a lot of time trying to get it to sound different. Seeing that you're used to something like the Vyper, you might consider the clean amp platform. Then you can buy an entire range of pedals that go from cheap to very high-end and you will have all of those sounds at your disposal. You can buy, sell, trade, etc... those things easily.

That's something I haven't really thought about. I only use a few different sounds. a couple heavy rhythm sounds, a couple different cleans, a lead sound, and a crunch. so this route could be affordable.. something to ponder. Thanks!

Re: Amp suggestions

Be aware that a tube amp of similar wattage will rip a SS amp to shreds. A 50w Line 6 Spider will stand no chance against a 50w tube amp. 15w is about what it takes to stay ahead of a normal drummer. If you have a guy who can't back the eff off the sticks, a more efficient speaker, putting it on a counter/stand will take care of it.

If you're practicing indoors and you get a 50-100w head, also invest in a power brake or something. As I said before, I can't even play my 5w head/12" speaker in my house without rattling the sliding glass door.

Re: Amp suggestions

Forgot to mention, i play 5 different guitars, one of them is a Nazgul equipt Rg 7321. The guitar itself is entry level 7 string, so decent but not amazing. Nazgul + Randall = percussive rhythms. Very Ola sounding. Ill try n do recordings soon for ya. If u like that sound, they do make a 20w Diavlo and its, i think, $400. I dont remember.

What about a used 5150 iii 50w?

Or used mini rectifier?

I'd def like a 5150 III 50 watter, i might look for a used one. so many preamp tubes! I'd appreciate hearing some randall recordings! The Diavlo 20 is $499 the 45 is $599. I'd probably shuck out the extra 100 for more headroom - do they have plenty of gain on tap? Tight enough without a boost? Thanks for your input and helps

Re: Amp suggestions

Is dominus' Randall V2 still available? That might be right up your alley.

EDIT: I just did the research for you. Here it is.

Yeah, you might be looking for the V2. One of the overdrive channels is tube, the other is solid state. Also has a 6 band post preamp EQ, 400W solid state power amp (so it sounds great at ANY volume), FX loop, tight switch, and direct out. Should do everything you're looking for.

Re: Amp suggestions

That's a lot of amp! Definitely cool though. It's something To think about. I have a long list of amps I want to try out. How much does that V2 weigh?

Ya tons of gain. I play mine with and without a tube screamer

Re: Amp suggestions

I've decided to play it safe and go with something I know and love. I'm going with a Peavey 6505 112 combo. Ive always loved peavey stuff. That's all I've ever owned amp wise and it's never failed me. I think it will suit my style and needs perfectly. I'll have to grab a few pedals along the way. A noise gate being first!

Thanks for everyone's input and suggestions!

Re: Amp suggestions

In a perfect world my first choice would be an orange thunderverb 50 or th30 with the ppc 212 cab. But I don't have $1200 much less $2400 for the Tverb. Plus the 750 for the cab.

Jet city JCA50H. If it can nail the SLO tone it's a Contender.

Any suggestions or info would be appreciated! Thanks.

If you're lusting after an Orange, like the all mighty Thunderverb 50, but are on a *budget, you MUST look into these 7-800 dollar tone monsters :

Yep. The 20 watt Dwarvonauts are more loud than the wattage would suggest. I think he's made a 300 watt amp for someone, or whatever the Elder God is. Falcons are 50w and Baltars are 100w I think.
