An inlay is popping out of my Les Paul.

Re: An inlay is popping out of my Les Paul.

Toofpick and a tiny tiny amount of Uberglue - I suggest Gel- spread on the wood beneath the popped fret. Small spring clamp with leather in between the fret and clamp to hold it down. Do not get glue on your hands before touching the guitar- it will melt the finish. Do not breathe the fumes of the glue!
Best of luck. The tendency is to use too much glue and to accidentally get it on the finish of the guitar-bad mistake.

The question you have to ask yourself is, are any of the other inlays coming adrift? Do you have humidity issues or has Gibson's build quality struck again?

Check for waggle. Let 'em come out. MM's suggestion of a thin application of gel superglue and pressure worked on a Squier VM Seventies style Jazz Bass.

Remain patient. Achieve a tidier result.

Re: An inlay is popping out of my Les Paul.

Your Lester is pretty new I would be contacting Gibson if I was dealing with this issue.

Re: An inlay is popping out of my Les Paul.

It happened after I oiled the fretboard. No other inlay is doing this.

.

It's the latter for sure.

I agree with above, toothpick, glue, clamp. BAM!

Re: An inlay is popping out of my Les Paul.

My first thought, although I wonder if it's worth it to mail my guitar to Nashville just for them to perform the same thing I can do myself.

That's not accurate, I think. You'll fix one inlay yourself and that's cool.
But the boys at Nashville can make sure no other inlays will pop out either. I've only had one inlay pop out in my guitar life and it was out of an Epiphone Strat neck that had been scalloped...
Sent it back man and make sure they give it a good check.

+ the warranty will not be voided this way.

Re: An inlay is popping out of my Les Paul.

They failed the first time, why bother?

And I can tell you they WONT check the others, just fix the current problem.

We sent one back once that had horrible nut/ binding issues. They didn't even put a new nut on, they filled it and re-cut over to where it was supposed to be.

Re: An inlay is popping out of my Les Paul.

It isn't impeding actual guitar playing. When it pops out to the point where it messes with the strings being fretted I guess I can glue it down.

I honestly don't know what to do. I sent Gibson an email.

Re: An inlay is popping out of my Les Paul.

There is no reason to contact Gibson personally. Everything you need to know is in your warranty.

The way the Gibson warranty works is you are supposed to take the instrument to your nearest authorized Gibson dealer, and they forward it to your nearest authorized Gibson repair shop (if they are not authorized themselves). It doesn't get sent back to Gibson unless there isn't an authorized repair place within a reasonable distance. If this is the case, your local dealer must have return approval from Gibson proper (i.e. an RA number) before doing so. At least that's how it worked when my bridge pickup crapped out on my almost new Les Paul about 12 years ago. Only I was able to bypass the dealership and just go to the repair guy, because I already knew he was Gibson-authorized.

Also of note is that the warranty does not cover "Any instrument that has been subjected to extremes of humidity or temperature." Ever left your guitar in the car? Warranty is void, technically, if you are gonna be honest about that when you talk to the repair shop. Live in a very humid environment, or a very hot or a very cold environment? Yes; you live in the tropics. Technically, your warranty might be void just based on where you live. Ever had any setup work, repairs, or mods on your guitar that were self performed, or otherwise not performed by a Gibson-authorized repair shop? Warranty void. Electronics crapped out after one year? Sorry, not covered. You probably won't run into sticklers for these issues, but it is worth realizing that their warranty pretty much sucks; they can find a reason to deny most claims if they really want to. So make sure you play "by the book" when having this issue dealt with.

At any rate, start by taking it in to your closest official Gibson dealer, and they should take care of the entire process for you, at no cost to you.

I never heard of an inlay just popping out unless a force is applied. What does this signify? Does this mean that Gibson quality has absolutely deteriorated?

It obviously wasn't glued in well enough. Easy mistake i guess.

Re: An inlay is popping out of my Les Paul.

I bend the neck on my 79 an extreme amount. All inlays just fine.

What did you pay for this? Just sayin'

Can't wait to hear how this turns out.

Re: An inlay is popping out of my Les Paul.

Acebob. How severe are the humidity, temperature and direct sunlight variations in FL?

Presumably, conditions on PR are more extreme than the mainland US. Are they really bad enough to make adhesive loose its grip?

Re: An inlay is popping out of my Les Paul.

I was just flailing around, looking for possible explanations beyond the obvious one that Gibson skimped on adhesive.

FL residents routinely do !

Re: An inlay is popping out of my Les Paul.

Nope. No possible way to fix it. It's a lost cause. I'd be happy to take the burden off your hands. :D
