Any Experienced Players Still Getting Blisters?

DeathALT.

I've been playing for about 5 years, and play every day for at least an hour, yet I'm still getting blisters and the skin on my fingers still peels after jams and long practices. Any one else still experience this? If so, is there anything I can do to prevent this from happening?

I don't know about 'prevent', but you can certainly do running repairs using superglue.

Without knowing exactly how you play, might want to try to finesse your technique - develop a lighter touch, bend less.

That being said - I'm looking at mine after nearly 40 years. No blisters, more of an issue possible arthritis in the thumb joint.

I've never had full blisters (fluid filled spots under your skin). If you're trying a new technique that is chewing up your fingers, stop when they start to hurt! (When I started to learn tapping licks I was getting a very sore middle finger tip on my right hand.) Occasionally some skin/callus will peel off from my finger tips, which I think is normal. I played two or three hours a night on medium gauge strings for many years and never had blisters though.

Re: Any Experienced Players Still Getting Blisters?

After the decade or so I've been playing, the skin is very tough on my fingertips and I will never blister or cut from them touching the steel strings. Sometimes there may be very thick callouses that can eventually tear. I have a really big one on one my index finger.

It's just something you have to condition yourself to, like anything really. Like a kung-fu master toughening his hands for the lethal dim mak blows.

It's not a big deal, just annoying at times. I guess there's nothing to do other than take the advice right above me. :D

Blisters? I've heard of peeling callouses which is pretty normal and typical for guitarists, but never blisters before. Are you sure it's not an allergic reaction to the metal of the strings you are using? Like a nickel allergy or something?

ive never had a blister per se...but i do still peel often. it is indeed annoying. I just tear it off and go.

I shed my skin every night! Oh wait a minute - those are my clothes... I'm nekkid! :p

Man, I haven't felt anything in my fingertips on my left hand in at least 15 years.

Give yourself a break to callous up. It'll happen. You don't need to dig so hard and under normal circumstances, you are going to do everything a little harder in the beginning because you are still unsure of it and then you should naturally loosen up over time.

If you are death gripping everything now, you will pay for it later.

Do you chamber your thumb on the back of the neck in a classical style? Don't press so hard. I JUST learned this lesson and believe me man...change your technique and let your thumb float there...it is worth the frustration of learning to play differently in order to keep on playing.

Good luck everybody.

Hmm - no issues with my left hand. Its my right thumb, probably basal joint is just worn out.

I used to have a death grip on the pick plus years assembling computers with an old fashioned screwdriver, I'm assuming.
