Guys, i need your help again !

Except for the "new" SuperSonic, what are the other Hi-Gain amps from Fender, (new or discont.) that will be suitable for *Stoner Rock ?

*think a heavier Soundgarden

Oh, and if you can point me into the direction of some clips, that would be fantastic :smokin:

Thanx to all
;)

Besides the Supersonic, the ones to look at are the other 3 from the Pro Tube Series...The Twin Reverb, Concert Reverb, and Pro Reverb. I'm talking about the channel switching ones with highgain......not the Twin/Concert vintage types.

In general, Fenders may not be the type of amp that suits that style though.

Thanx, i'll have a look in the Fender Field Guide, but someone told me Fender made (mid 90's i think) a Hi-Gian amp that was modeled after a Mesa of some sort - how much truth is in that statement ??? :eek13:

From what I've read, the Fender "II" series amps from the early 80's were they're attempt to compete with The Mesa's out at that time (I think the Mark series). They were designed by Paul Rivera, and are great sounding amps (I have the 80's concert from the II series), But I have no idea whether they actually sound anything like the Mesa's they were suppoused to be competeing with. I've never played any of the Mark series mesa's.
I'm not aware of any fenders from the 90's that sound anything like any of the mesa's out at that time.

Thanx mate !

How does the gain sound (for rhythm style riffing) to your ears ?
Is it possible to even try and descibe it ?

Re: Any Hi-Gain Fender amps for Stoner Rock ?

Simplistic answer:
Hi-gain Fender is Mesa Boogie! Mesa made its name by using 6L6 tubes like Fender, but added one more preamp tube to add up to 100x more gain before the signal hits the amp's power tube section. Mesa cleans do not equal Fender cleans by nature either.

I borrowed a friends Concert II in the 1980's (I bought/still have the lower cab and EVM12L), and there is simply not enough drive without a pedal, AND disappointing amounts of @ss on the bottom end. Palm mutes were bulimic. It's a great amp, just not my style.

Palm mutes are Stoner!. Fender does not do thick palm mutes. Don't bring a steak knife to gun fight!:13:

Theres some clips I recorded (mainly to show what the lil 59 sounds like) of the amp. The gain sounds great I think, But I dunno how well it would work for stoner rock, seems to have more of a classic rock or 80's metal feel to it to me. But with the gain set fairly low (3 or soo) and a Big muff with the gain set low, it can get a decent stoner rock sorta sound to it. But that has more to do with the bigmuff than it does with the amp, I think.

WOW - thanx man !

What a nice amp you have ! :smokin:

You are right, it does sound ever so slightly 80's - probably due to the fact that it was made in the 80's :eek13:

This amp, or maybe even a Prosonic together with a Big Muff (...or Super Fuzz) will def. get me in a ball-park Stoner Rock area :smokin:

I listened to the 'new' Supersonic clips on the Fender site, and the "precussion" clip is soooo very close to what i am aiming at !

I s'pose i can get a Prosonic (used) at a better price/deal than a used Supersonic . . .

How agout the TWIN AMP ? (aka, Evil Twin)
That's not the "Evil Twin," which was the nickname of a previous incarnation of the Twin-Amp.

That said, the Twin-Amp of whatever version is a simply dreadful amp for so many different objective reasons I don't have time to list them all. I will say that with the exception of a few country players who want a lot of clean headroom (and why don't they go solid-state then, I wonder?), I don't know anyone who owns one, including myself, who doesn't regret it.

About all they are consistently good for is creating lower back problems, for which they are notorious.

Re: Any Hi-Gain Fender amps for Stoner Rock ?

The "Evil-Twin" is a killer amp, and highly recommended...IMHO

Re: Any Hi-Gain Fender amps for Stoner Rock ?

I'd get a Bassman or Vibrolux...some kinda 40 watt-ish 6L6 single channel amp...2x10 or 2x12 and a good fuzz pedal or two.

Turn it up... puff... blast.

Don't fuk around with the solid state stuff. It's not worth the time.

Tubes rock.

hey fenders are kinda the holy grail for that tone, but only if you get:

a pre 1966 blackface fender bassman

or

the sunn model t (sunn amps are bassed after fenders)

either of those amps can be heard on tons of recordings of stoner rock and doom. I say just get one and be on yer way. :13:

you can do a search at www.stonerrock.com and it will verify what I am saying here.

i don't know but what about the Fender Tonemaster?

Lee Ranaldo and Richie Sambora uses/used them.

Re: Any Hi-Gain Fender amps for Stoner Rock ?

I've owned a couple of the Rivera-designed Fender amps and several Boogies.

Here it is:

The Rivera amps don't have the pure, singing LEAD voice (think Santana) that the Boogie does. For the most part their cleans are very good. Amps like the Fender 75, Super Champ, Concert, Twin II, Deluxe Reverb II, Princeton II--what works well is, set it clean, use a minimum amount of overdrive in the GAIN channel for SRV-type "pushed" tone--and then drive the amp with a great "Screamer" pedal for that singing lead tone.

None of the Fender tube amps can touch a Boogie for overdrive tones. Not the Pro-Sonic, Tone Master, The Twin, or even the new Super Sonic.

The best insane gain Fenders? Believe it or not, their SS M-80 or their hybrid Roc Pro 1000. I always thought the Roc Pro 1000 head was decent sounding amp for not much money.

By the way, if you are thinking vintage SUNN--these amps are extremely loud, and they don't distort. They use 6550 tubes, and they are very dynamic. They were, in fact, designed around an old hi-fi amp, made by a company called Dynaco. It's very different from the Fender design. And they don't sound anything alike.

A BF Band Master head is about 45 watts; a SUNN Solarus head about 60 watts. The SUNN has a pronounced mid-range punch especially noticeable at low volume--comparitively the Band Master sounds weak and bodiless.

When pushed, the Band Master sings--the tone compresses and becomes sweeter, yet stays defined--the typical Fender sound. The SUNN simply doesn't want to break up--and that thicker midrange tonality starts to muddy up and the amp sounds like a blanket has been thrown over it. Even the 60 watt amps were punishingly loud. The Sunn 120-watt amps like the 1000S and 1200S and the vintage Model-T will play crushing rock, but you need a pedal in front of it to create the buzz.

Fender amps have long been a necesary part of rock and roll. They are tremendously versatile, but in this case you would be better served by either a Mesa or a Marshall.

BILL - thanx a million for that super reply

You know your stuff :smokin:

I tried to do a search on the net last night (after posting this question, and after i came back fronm an out-door metal festival - going back there this afternoon), and what i came up with, was these :

* TWIN-AMP
* Supersonic
* Prosonic
* Concert II (with twin gain stages)

None of those are out-right Mesa eaters (they are Fenders), but they are the highest gian-amps Fender made. I am also NOT looking for that KORN-type Mesa sounds - NO THANX :blackeye:

Is there any place where i can hear (get an idea) of what these sound, gain wise ??

Thanx again !

Re: Any Hi-Gain Fender amps for Stoner Rock ?

I am totally doubling the recommendation for the Fender Tonemaster. That sounds *exactly* what you're looking for. But also I'd recommend a Fender Super Reverb and a pedal to drive it. Total stoner rock area right there man.

TONEMASTER FTW!!! :laugh2:

What I currently play through... I didn't even know Lee used em :)

Great all around. I love the thing. I should buy it from my bassist :D
