Re: Any Hi-Gain Fender amps for Stoner Rock ?

something with hemp speakers would be fitting dont you think?

Re: Any Hi-Gain Fender amps for Stoner Rock ?

Why so stuck on Fender? I'm guessing you could get exactly what you're looking for from a Matamp or one of the newer Oranges like the Rocker 50, etc. That stuff was MADE for stoner rock.

Very true mate . . . but i am one of those guys who do not follow trends for trends sake !

If i can get a good sound from something else and i will go with that, in order to, "not follow the flock" . . saying that, there IS a reason why Orange, Sunn and Matamps are the choosen weapons.

Funny thing is, i heard many clips on the net (Orange Forum & elsewhere), and neither the AD or the Rocker series of current amp sound all that dark to me - in fact thet sound 'normal' to me, and dark is the last words that i would used to describe them !

Is Matamps the same, or can anyone say for sure that they are def. DARKER sounding than the current Orange models ?

There's something to be said for that - I can appreciate wanting to put your own spin on it, but consider the fact you're pretty set on a standard stoner/doom sound - trying to get that sound from gear not particularly suited for it isn't straying from the flock as much as it's trying to use a screwdriver to hammer nails...

In a nutshell: if you want a tone just like other bands, who cares what gear you use?

But hey - it's your sound and your gear - if you want to use a specific rig to get a specific sound, I'm not gonna throw any stones. The sound in your head will guide you to what is right, no matter what it is.

That's just the way those particular clips were EQ'd, I'm sure. The Orange and Matamp stuff is definitely capable of darker tones. They differ from your typical Fender/Marshall vibe in that they have so much midrange complexity that you can pull out tons of high end and still have a musical-sounding tone.

I think the biggest reason those amps are popular with the stoner/doom crowd is not so much that they sound "dark" - something that could be dialed in to almost any good amp - it's the raw, organic nature to their tone.

Good luck in your amp search!

Fantastic - i se the Prosonic is Valve rectified (a good thing IMHO).

How is that valve sag when hitting a power chord ?

I LOVE VALVE SAG !

Thanx for the info !

It's great, I love this freakn thing, its probably the best amp I've had to date.

Re: Any Hi-Gain Fender amps for Stoner Rock ?

if you stray from the trend, your gonna have to do alot of tweaking. best thing to do is to play the amps before ya buy.

Re: Any Hi-Gain Fender amps for Stoner Rock ?

Hey, i LOVE your tone on, "Breathin' Whiskey" . . .

. . . what was your rig like for that tone ?

PU's ?
FX ? . . . Double Muff ???
Amp ? . . . Sunn O))) ???

. . . very cool :smokin:

I like what you do !

heh thanks for the props dude, i really appreciate it. The rig on that track is my usual rig...my Strat, the Double Muff and my Fender Bassman head into the Sunn 4x12. The song 'three percent by volume' is the same rig with my SG.

And bro, as nice as it is to 'stray from the flock' and rock out on a Fender head, I've got to say I wish I had an Orange amp.

Thanx for the insight to your rig/gear !
You made a S/C guitar sound good to my ears ! That's a 1st !!!
I knew there is a reason i want a S/C $350.00 Melody Maker ;)

So, what type of Orange would you take then ?

A.) a currant production model, AD or Rocker series....or....

B.) and older discont. model ?

I know only the AD & Rocker's, but it seems to me that alot of the Stoner/Sludge bands use older 70's models ! :eek13:
So they must use 'em for a reason.

. . . are they darker sounding ???

Re: Any Hi-Gain Fender amps for Stoner Rock ?

+1 for the Roc Pro line . I bought mine years ago and it has a massive gain channel huge clean, great reverb and is really light weight, both head and cab. back in the day I bought them both new for like $800 and played it for years with zero problems. Still have it in the corner too in case some local kid want to try and one up me some day with his metal rig :)

They're cleaner and louder.

I have both a Rocker 30 and AD30 and they're cool amps, but if they have one drawback when it comes to stoner it's the lack of volume/headroom.

30w is awesome if you want the sound of an amp running full out and they do clean up reasonably well when you roll back on the volume, but if you're into using fuzz or delay 30w is nowhere near enough headroom IMO; atleast not at the volumes I like to play at.

It also kinda sucks because although 30w is loud it doesn't pound your face in like 100w does... and in a venue where you can play loud it takes away from the power of your riffs at times.

My next amp will be a 120w Electric Amp. If I couldn't afford the Electric I'd look at a Plexi. I'll probably A/B/Y the Electric with my AD30... the Electric for clean/rhythm and the AD30 for leads.

Why jump straight from 30 watts to 120 ?? 50-60 watts pumping through a good 4x12 is more than enough to pound faces... If you really dig your Rocker 30, why not a Rocker 50?

Or is the Electric just under your skin like that... :)

Re: Any Hi-Gain Fender amps for Stoner Rock ?

Why jump straight from 30 watts to 120 ??

Because Electric doesn't make an 80w version and I want more headroom than a 50w amp has.

That, and I don't want to deal with the headache of a vintage Orange or the BS of dealing with Matamp across continents.

INT-er-est-ingggg.

Tell me more about these Electric amplifiers. Their name is just weird and generic-sounding enough that I'll bet they're really cool and no one knows about them.

Electric is run/owned by a guy named Joel.

This is the short version.

Once upon a time Joel played through a Matamp and fell in love. Initially Matamp didn't want to ship anything across the ocean but he bugged the piss out of them until they finally gave in and he begins selling/distributing them to the US market. Years go by and they eventally have a falling out. He wants certain options and Matamp doesn't want to work with him so he discontinues doing business with Matamp and strikes out on his own.

Somehow he got some original 70s specs from the Mathis family and started contracting someone State-side to build them for him under the Electric Amp brand name with his own cosmetic quirks (I seem to remember him being really pissed off about the fact that Matamp kept changing the knobs on him).

The current line of Electric Amps use a pretty authentic early 70s era Orange/Matamp design.

Cool - thanks. The whole Orange/Matamp/Electric mythos gets twistier by the day.

It's to the point you can basically think of a color, put the word "amp.com" after it, and it's going to take you to a website where you're hit in the face with images of HUUUUUUUGE cabinets in nightmare-color tolex.

Right now the Electrics have the coolest presentation by far.
