Hi guys

I was just wondering whether anyone has had an opportunity to compare the Alnico II Pros / Slash Custom Shop APHs with the stock Gibson Burstbucker Pros.

i have the BBs at the moment and am still toying with changing. Any help is greatly appreciated!

All the best

Al

Re: APH1 v Burstbucker Pros

personally i think the bb pros are a little too bright for my tastes. the bb1/bb2/bb3 alnico II versions are nicer to my ears but even those dont have as smooth a tone as the aph. never tried the slash model

I think most of the guys here will stick with Jeremy in saying that the BB's are too bright for their tastes. I haven't A/B'd them but do Ihave an A2P bridge.
I put i in the bridge slot of my Heritage 150 (heritage's lp standard similiar constructin techniques to the historic) about 3 months ago and it sounds great. Not too much treble bass or mids...very even sounding...of course I crank my mids on my amp and make it a bit mid heavy tone. In the neck I've got a Jazz and they work great together in my opinion.

Re: APH1 v Burstbucker Pros

I have actually a/b 'ed the APH-1's to teh BB Pros in my LP 2003 Standard. It is a matter of personal taste as to which buckers you will prefer when it comes down to deciding. Both sets are pretty mellow sounding pikcups and i appreciate gibson moving back to their roots with the bb pros. Since the BB Pros use Alnico 5 magnets, they sound a little scooped in the mids and brighter than the APH-1's. This was good for the neck pickup, but the bridge pickup sounded a little thin on clean tones. When I dropped in the set of APH-1's, the mids were very apparent and made for a fuller sounding tone, and the tones were thick sounding. Another thing about the APH-1's that I like is that it has a very nice midrange singing quality that can't be beat. My only gripe was that they had less attack than the bb pros. Hope this helps.

Thanks guys for your replies they were very informative. I'm seriously looking at a set of APH1s for both positions perhaps in zebra!!! AAAHHHH! :laugh2:

If I find out more I'll let you all know.

All the best

i also agree with jeremy, the bb were just not my cup of tea, even in a really nice guitar like the custom shop 59 reissue i played a week ago. I think if you want a nice smooth tone like slash, then the APH's are the only way to go
